Board object of suit in district court today
A suit asking for another
polling place has been filed
against the board of trustees of
the Rio Grande City In-
dependent School District in
229th District Court. A hearing
on the suit has been set for
Thursday (today) at 11 a.m.
March 28. The suit will be heard
by Judge O.P. Carrillo.
The suit was filed Thursday
afternoon by Jose Maria
(Chema) Alvarez, et al, against
Dr. Gilbert© A. (Nene) Garza et
al. Also filing the suit asking for
replacement of a polling place
were two candidates Charles La
Grange and Javier D. Margo.
Some Starr County residents
also filed the suit in conjunction
with the Alvarez and the can-
didates, they were, Flora
Minerva Garcia, Ramon
Corona, Gustavo Rivera,
Bernardo Yzaguirre, Can-
delario Sepulveda, Esteban
Rivera, Reyes Soto, Eulalio
Cortez, Reynaldo O. Perez,
Reynaldo 0. Perez Jr.,

Perez, Nilda Perez, Maria S.

Tissa named outstanding
club woman for South Texas
On Friday, March 22, during
the luncheon meeting of the
Fourteenth Annual Spring
Convention of the South Texas
District Federation of Women's
Clubs, Mrs. James E. Peterson
of the Florence J. Scott Study
Club of Rio Grande City was
named "Outstanding Club-
woman of a Junior Club". A
silver dish was presented to
Mrs. Peterson as a memento of
the honor by Mrs. Martin Garza
Jchairman.
The members of the Florence
J. Scott Study Club, a
Federated Junior Woman's
Club dedicated to serving the
community, submitted the
name of their president, Mrs.
Peterson for the honor. Mrs.
Peterson, "Tissa," became a
member of the club in the Fall
cf 1970 and is currently serving
as President of the Florence J.
Scott Study Club, as * II as
Home Life Department
Chairman for the South Texas
District, and Department
Chairman of Junior Clubs for
t^.e Rio Grande Valley
Federation of Women's Clubs.
She has served on the local
club's Membership Committee,
Service Committee, and
Mm %
Yearbook Committee twice.
She served as chairman of the
Finance Committee and the
Publicity Committee.
As President of the Florence
J. Scott Study Club, she
directed the club in co-
sponsoring, with the Rio
Grande City Woman's Club,
Florence J. Scott Day on
November 1, 1973. This county-
wide function, attended by
State, District, and Valley
Women's Club dignitaries, was
highlighted by a reception
honoring the founder of the
local Junior Woman's Club.
Tissa handled all the publicity
for this event, including a
SDecial issue of the Rio Grande
Herald, dedicated to Mrs.
Scott, a noted author, educator,
historian, and clubwoman.
On oanuary 27, 1974, the
Flounce J. Scott Study Club
si, -ed the March of Dimes
Vothers' March in Rio Grande
City, under Tissa's chair-
manship. The March wl r ry
successful, with over $350 bt^.g
collected during the one-day
drive.
Tissa enthusiastically led this
project, as the March of Dimes
Quest for Healthy Babies is a
State Junior Project; and being
the mother of two young
children, she has made the
Quest for Healthy Babies one of
her pet projects. This was her
subject as she addressed the
annual Spring Convention of the
Rio Grande Valley Federation
of Women's Clubs on April 24,
1973 in Weslaco. As featured
speaker for the convention,
Mrs. Peterson outlined the
history of the Healthy Babies
Project for State TFWC
Juniors. She told of the pur-
poses, successes, continuation,
and growth of our QUEST,
Quality Education and Service
Together, for Healthy Babies..
Mrs. Peterson also took an
active part in the club's Youth
Career Day held in March of
1973. She encouraged the
enlarging of the annual
Fashions for Fun Contest in 1973

The suit names Dr. Garza,
John Pope III, Dr. Rarniro
Narro, Alicia McLellan, Raul
Guerrero and Roberto Margo
and Arnoldo Gonzalez. The suit
asks that Margo and Gonzalez
are named only as nominal
defendants and that they the
plaintiffs seek no action against
them.
The basic demand of the suit
is a polling place at Roque
Guerra Elementary School. The
suit states that for some 25
years there has been a polling
place at the school and that the

An informative talk by State
Senator John Traeger
highlighted the Rio Grande City
Chamber of Commerce In-
stallation of Officers Banquet
held last Friday night at the
Multipurpose Center. Traeger,
who himself served as
President of the Chamber of
Commerce in Seguin as a young
man, expressed hope and en-
thusiasm for the growth of a
town thorugh the activities of
the local Chamber.
The 1974 officers of the Rio
Grande City Chamber of
Commerce, installed during the
banquet by F.L. Niederjohn,
are Richard Gutierrez,
President; Charles LaGrange,
President; Charles Richmond,
Treasurer; Kenneth Anderson,
Secretary; Arnoldo Zarate,
Eliseo Smith, and Narciso
Cantu, Directors; and Hamiro
Guerra, Publicity Chairman.
With the theme, "Progress for
a Better Tomorrow," the new
