The Rio Grande City Inde-
pendent School Board of
Trustees meeting in their re-
gular session failed to accept
a school district insurance bid,

from trustee Alex W.
Gabert and r ehired
the Rio Grande City High
School coaching staff after they
had asked that their contracts
be renewed but not in coaching
capacities with the district.
The board also approved con-
tracts for all teachers not al-
ready on a continous contract.
The meeting opened with the
board approving the minutes
and hearing a request from

ing the board to be present

directors for Region I. Re-

Roma administration
draws no opposition
Expectations of a heated city
and school election in the City
of Roma lied early this week
when deadlines for filing for
the April 7th election came to
a close.
Those filing for the city posi-
tions were J.C. Guerra, in-
cumbent mayor of the com-
munity. Also filing with Guer-
ra were Imra G. YunesandRi-
cardo Esparza. Mrs. Yunes

The Starr County Commis-
sioners court meeting in their
regular session Monday heard
various reports and then re-
cessed until Friday at 1 p.m.
to continue their meeting.
The court first heard a re-
port from the county auditor E.
G. Gonzalez which told com-
missioners that the county has
$142,228.80 in the treasury.
The accounts payable are 1970,
$20,000.00, 1971, $19 T'OO.OOand
1972 $6r.,000.00 for a total of
$160,000.00 minus $26,000.00
leaves a balance of $79,496.00.
The county trea.urer re-
ported that the First itateBank
and Trust Company had re-
ported an interest payment of
$1,837.00 on the $352,808.00 or
for an interest payment of 6.1/4
per cent.
The court was then handed
copies of reports from the
County Road Superintendent Ro-
berto Pena. They also heard
a report from bridge manager
Ernesto Trevino. Trevino also
argued that a contract made
by the county for lease of the
first floor space to a customs
broker in Roma was going to
present a clear and present
breakdown to his operation of
the bridge. Trevino said that
the space leased by the county
left the entire electrical system
in the space leased to an H.J.
Brady of McAllen. He also
pointed out that he had arranged
for a new contract to lease only
that portion which could be
leased.
He also argued that the con-
tract was wrong because the
court had leased the space to
Ronnie Guerra of Roma and not
to Brady. The court instructed
Trevino to workout the con-
tract with Guerra and bring a
recommendation to the court by
Friday.
The court also heard a re-
port from Community Action
Council Director Francisco
(Paco) Zarate. Zarate told the
court that his organization had
been given a 30 day extension
on their program and that pos-
sibly a 90 day phase out period
would be forthcoming.
Commissioners also heard
reports from Soil Conservation
District Director Silvestre
Gonzalez. Gonzalez brought the
court up-to-date on what has
been done on various projects
and onLosOlmos up to now.
Gonzalez also invited com-
missioners to join the five top
men in the state Soil Conser-
vation Program for a tour of the
county to determine priorities
for the forth-coming funding
period.
The group will meet next
Tuesday morning and travel
various areas of the county
and return to Rio Grande City
by 2 p.m.
The court also approved a
resolution authorizing the Soil
District Conservationist to seek
Rural Fire Fighting equipment
for the county. Also included in
the request was a requisition
for a DC6 catapillar.
Gonzalez told the court that
if the county maintained the
equipment the district could

who chose not to seek re-elec-
tion to the city commission
posts.
In the school elections at Roma

tion presently held by Martin
Canales who will not seek re-
election to the school seat. In
the only other race for the
school race Bill Best, present
school board president, will
seek re-election un-opposed.
The elections will be held
April 7.
