No g.'l, according to the women, is
as pretty as she used to be.at that time it wears a long beard,
which makes it look still more like a
goat. It has a very distinct hump on
the shoulders, and the head is usually
carried low. Vhite goats are
quite as queer in their habits as in
their looks They delight in cold, and,
except in the northernmost portion of
their range, they keep to the very
tops of the mountains, and at midday,
if the sun is at all powerful, they
retire to caves to rest themselves.
They have the very curious habit of
sitting up on their haunches, in the
attitude of a dog begging, when looking
about for any foe whose presence
they suspect. They are wonderful
climbers, although they have no liveliness
or aglllty of movement; their
s u r e
footedness and remarkable
strength enables them to go up or
down seemingly impossible placs.
Their great round hoofs, with sharpcut
edges, can grip the slightest projection
in the rocks, and no precipice
or ice wall has any terrors for them.
At times they come quite low towards
the foot-hills, usually to visit some
mineral lick, but generally they are
found only in the very high broken,
ground, among stupendous crags and
precipices. They are self-confident,
rather stupid beasts, and a;s they are
accustomed to look for danger only
from below, it is an easy matter to
approach them if once the hunter is
able to get above them; but they live
in such inaccessible places that their
pursuit entails great labor and hardship.
Their sharp, black horns are eight
or ten inches long, with points like
needles, and their necks are thick and
muscular, so that they are dangerous
enemies foi a y foe to handle at close
quarters, and they know their capacities
very well, and are confident
In their prowess, often preferring
to stand and fight a dog or wolf rather
than try to run. Nevertheless, though
they are such wicked and resolute
fighters, they have not a few enemies
The young kids are frequently carried
off by eagles and mountain lions,
wolves, and occasionally even wolverines
prey upon the grown animals
whenever they venture down out of
their inaccessible resting places to
prowl along the upper edges of the
timber or on the open terraces of
grass and shrubby mountain plants.
If a goat is on its guard, and can get
its back to a rock, both wolf and
panther will fight shy of facing the
thrust of the dagger-like horns; but
the beasts of prey are so much more
agile and stealthy that if they can get
a goat in the open or take it by surprise
they can readily pull it down.
The Barbirussa.
Of the babirussa, a remarkable hoglike
animal whose head is heie shown,
there is but one species, and that is
found only in the islands of Celebes
and Buru, in the Malay Archipelago.
It is accounted a fierce animal, dangeious
to encounter. They aie gregarious,
semi-nocturnal, and tond of the
v.ater. Its external surface is almost
entirely devoid of hair. Its Sreat peculiarity
is the extraordinary development
of the canines of the male. These
canine teeth turn upward and backward
to form a semicircle They resemlle
horns rather than teeth ' It
is difficult to understand," wIltes Dr.
Alfred Rnssel Wallace "what can We
the use of these horn-like teeth Some
of the old writers supposed that they
served as hooks by which the creature
could rest Its head on a branch But
the way in which they usually diverg,e
lust over and in fiont of the eyes has
suggested the more probable idea that
thry serve to guard these organs from
thorns and spines while haunting for
fallen fruit among the tangled thickets
of rattans and other spiny plants.
Even this, however, is not satisfactory,
for the female, who must seek her food
in the same way, does not possess
them
"I should be inclined to believe rather
that these tusks weie once useful,
and were then worn down as tast as
they grew, but that changed conditions
or life have rendered them unnecessary,
and they now develop Into a
monstrous form, just as the incisors of
the beaver and rabbit will go on growng
if the opposite teeth do not wearthem away. In old animals they reach
The Danger.
"Beg pardon, sir, but are you acqualnted
with the editor of the Clarion?"
asked a recently arrived tourist,
who had just visited the printing offlce,
and, not finding the editor in, was
now seeking him on the streets of the
settlement.
"I'd ha
to think I wasn't," jocularly
replied Alkali Ike, to whom the
question was addressed.
"Ah! How does hc look?"
"Tall, thin gent, wearin' what you
might call a thoughtful look, also a
white hat an' a long-tailed coat. I
noticed him a spell ago whirlin' down
the street at a rate of speed that made
the tails of that thar coat fly out behind
him till you could have played
poker on 'em if you could have kept
up with him."
"Indeed," ejaculated the Easterner.
"And what desperate danger caused
him to run in that manner?"
"Wal," responded Ike, "bein' as he
had a six-shooter in each hand an' was
nmilkin' their contents right an' left
at a passel of fleein' gent3 like a cabbage-raiser
operatin' two sprinklin'
cans, I reckon, most likely, that the
danger was that some of his delinquent
subscribers would git out of town
without first comin' to the office an'
setthln' their subscriptions, as they
had promised."

The Ruling Passion
Just why a sermon on hard times
should be placed in the bicycle column
of the Tribune because the divine
who preached the sermon was named
Wheeler is one of the dark and dubious
mysteries of this bright June day.
P is not known that the Rev Kittrldge
Wheeler is a devotee of the bicycle;
there has never been any allegation
to the effect that bicycling and hard
times are inseparable, and it would be
a daring supposition to presume that
the Rev Wheeler's parishioners are of
the kind who can only be reached
through the bicycle columns. Yet
there is the item Full in the foreground
of the bicycle column it stands,
directly under and subsequent to a
thrilling narrative of accidents to
riders, of arrests of scorchers and elevated
tracks for wheelmen, and the
heading is "Wheeler's Cause for Hard
Times "

No man _ets ab much mall as he
seems to expectcountry, and the last living Auk was
seen on a small island of the coast of
Newfoundland about 35 years ago. One
of the few eggs which have been preserved
was sold in 1892 for $1,500.
Of the four specimens of the auk now
in this country, one is owned by the
Academy of Natural Science at Philadelphia,
Pa This academy is also the
owner of an egg The other museums
that possess specimens of the
auk and its eggs are the Smithsonian
Institute at Washington, the American
Museum of Natural History and Central
Park, New York, but the specimens
owned by the Academy of Natural
Sciences at Philadelphia are the
finest in existence. The great auk was
the largest of the family of auks measuring
35 inches in length. The plumage
was a glossy black above, with a
pure white breast, and white underparts
The bird laid but one egg and
this was on the bare and rocky cliff
of some desolate northern island The
last live auk was captured off the coast
of Ireland in 1844 In 1868 one was
found dead on the coast of Labrador
and was sold in London for $250.

You need not answer the question, madam,
for in your case age is not counted by years. It
will always be true that "a woman is as old
as she looks." Nothing sets the seal of age
.so deeply upon woman's beauty as gray hair.
} It is natural, therefore, that every woman is
anxious to preserve her hair in all its original
abundance and beauty; or, that being denied
the crowning gift of beautiful hair, she longs
to possess it. Noitring is easier than to attain
to this gift or to preserve it, if already
possessed. Ayer's Hair Vigor restores gray
or faded hair to its original color. It does this
by simply aiding nature, by supplying the ,~
nutrition necessary to health and growth.
There is no better preparation for the hair q
