SHAFER, Juanita
Of Los Angeles, died Wednesday night after
90 years of memories.
She was born (Annie Cowan) on November
26, 1910, in Dallas, Texas.
A longtime resident of Los Angeles, Juanita
is survived by her two children, Carol
Wiseman and Robert Shafer. She had nine
grandchildren, Linda Bernstein, Cynthiaflowers.
Eberly, Lisa Waikalani, Jim Rivin, and
sixteen great-grandchildren. She was loved
by all who knew her.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday at 1:00
P.M. at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001

VERNON, Frank Lee, Jr.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather,
and resident of Pasadena for 48 years, died
unexpectedly Monday night, July 22,
following knee surgery.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lynne
Vernon and his family, Frank Lee Vernon
III, Julie Vernon Parker, Steven Parker, Lisa
M. Vernon, Iry Kaplan and his grand-
children Jenny, Matthew and Lexie.
Frank was born in Dallas, Texas on Sept. 16,
1927. He was a graduate of Highland Park
High School and attended SMU until 1944,
when, at the age of seventeen, he joined the
Navy. After his discharge in the summer of
1946, he came to California for a one week
visit to fellow serviceman's home and
stayed for three weeks after meeting Lynne.
He returned to SMU to complete his B.S. in
electrical engineering in January, 1949.
After eighteen months of working on a
geophysical crew in California, he married
Lynne in August, 1950 and then returned to
school at UC Berkeley where he earned hisMasters degree. He then went to work at
Hughes Aircraft while he earned his Ph.D. at
Caltech. He felt very fortunate to have
Nobel Laureate Professor Richard Feynman,
a man for whom he had tremendous respect
and admiration, as his thesis adviser. He
received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering
and Physics in 1959.
In March, 1961, he joined the Aerospace
Corporation, a nonprofit research and
development organization, where he
continued working until his death. As a
world-renowned scientist, he conducted
research in the areas of Big Bang Theory
verification, low temperature
superconductors, semiconductor physics,
and laser propagation through the
atmosphere.
Frank was an active and devoted father,
serving as Scoutmaster for his son's Boy
Scout troop, taking his family on trips to
Carpinteria and the California mountains,
