knowledge, that a day, except Sundays, had
passed without a single license being issued.
Deputy M. L. Camp, who has been the
filing clerk for more than three years, said that
he did not remember when a license had not
been sold and said that he had never heard of a
time when such was the case. Friday is known
as a day when few licenses are issued and therehave been a number of "hodoo" days when only
one license was issued, but yesterday eclipsed
all other Fridays as far as the memory of the
present force goes. It is the exception when a
marriage license is issued to a negro on Friday,
as there is some superstition attached to the day
with that race, it is said.Dallas Morning News 2 Dec 1915

Divorce Is Leading Cause of Action, Damage Cases Number 710- Appeals Taken
in Eighty-Nine Instances.Opening of the new fiscal year for
Dallas County courts and the monthly figures
for November compiled in a number of the
county offices offered some interesting statistics
in reports made yesterday.
Despite the activities of the three Civil
District Courts, more suits were filed during the
year than were disposed of. The figures show
an increase of 353 suits over the number that
were pending a year ago. The report covers a
total of 2,865 cases handled by the Civil District
Courts during the year.
Divorce was the leading cause of action,
1,114 suits for legal separation being filed. Of
these 835 were tried and 374 dismissed.
Seventeen divorces were refused. There were
773 actions in debt, of which 347 were tried and
374 dismissed.
Damage suits numbered 710, 228 being
tried and 226 dismissed. There 93 injunctions,
79 tax suits, 53 ex parte actions, only one of
which was dismissed; 42 suits for partition of
property and three habeas corpus actions in civil
courts. Total number of suits tried was 1,346
and total number dismissed 1,168. Suitspending (filed since Nov. 30, 1914) number
1,645.
Of the suits tried eight-nine were
appealed. Judgment was affirmed in nine and
reversed in two. Seventy-eight are pending in
the higher courts. Criminal District Court
figures have not been completed.
Poll Tax Payments Slower.
Poll tax payments up to Dec. 1 were
thirteen behind the number up to Dec. 1 the year
before, according to figures compiled in the
office of County Tax Collector Charles A.
Tosch. The poll tax payments for November,
however, showed a gain of almost $10,000. The
collections were $111,376.10, compared with
$101,842.32 in November, 1914.
A tabulation of exemption certificates is
not made until the end of the poll tax paying
period. Approximately 500 were issued in
November, the number being about the same as
in the November preceding.
Deputy County Clerk M. L. Camp
turned his numbering machines back to 1 after
they had reached totals that were slightly below
the 1914 totals. The numbers showed that thereDallas Journal 2006 23
