DALLAS COUNTY WORLD WAR I DRAFT RECORDS
Part 3 (continued from 1999 DGS Journal)
Abstracted by: Shari L. Degan, Judy Gilreath Johns, and Sue Poindexter.
The World War I draft records, recently made available on microfilm, by county, from the Family
History Library, are an under-utilized 20th century record. The Dallas Public Library has all of the
draft records for Texas and those for Dallas County make up almost six rolls.
Because World War I had three different draft cards, for three different draft calls, in 1917 and
1918, the information varies greatly depending upon the date of registration. If a category is
blank, then the information was not on that card. In a county like Dallas, where there had been a
great migratory influx at the turn of the century, some of these cards can be most valuable. On
one set of cards, the birthplace of the father is given. You will note even in this small sampling
the large number of countries and states represented as birthplaces.
Another value of these records is that most of the cards have an exact date of birth, as most of
the men in this record were born before mandatory birth registration had begun. Due to space
limitations, not all of the information on the cards is abstracted here. You will want to go to the
original record to search for your relative. They are filed alphabetically by county, or in larger
counties, alphabetically by district.I
