Copies of birth, marriage, and death information from three family Bibles were
donated to the Genealogy Section of the Dallas Public Library by GeorgeAnne Dukes.
GeorgeAnne is the current owner of James Beverly Littlepage and the Pleasant Shields
Gardner family Bibles and has given DGS permission to use the information recorded on
these family pages. DGS has permission by the owner to use the information recorded
in the Samuel Charles Littlepage family Bible and any queries should be made through
GeorgeAnne. GeorgeAnne wrote that at one time she thought the three family Bibles
were lost or destroyed.
The Bibles contain entries about the Littlepage and Gardner families. The older
Littlepage Bible (1850) belonged to Mr. and Mrs. James Arbuckle Littlepage. However,
the entries begin with the family of James Beverly Littlepage, who moved from
Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Travis County, Texas. This Bible
may well have belonged to them before passing it on to their son, James Arbuckle
Littlepage, and then to his son, Samuel Charles Littlepage.
The later Littlepage Bible (1884) records the family of Samuel Charles Littlepage
and Virginia (Jennie) Roberta Gardner Littlepage. The Gardner Bible was owned by
Pleasant Shields Gardner and his wife, Sallie Noel Ferguson Gardner, parents of Virginia
Roberta Littlepage. Samuel Charles and Virginia were married in Austin, Texas. They
ranched in various Texas counties, including Lampasas, Burnet, Frio, and Lynn. They
were living in Dublin, Erath County, Texas when they died.
The Bible entries are presented in italics as a family history. Letters, newspaper
clippings, and recipes were slipped into the Bibles. The family history information
included was provided by Dale and GeorgeAnne Dukes.1996~ 21 DGSJouna
