Senate, to "Report upon the situation of the country," beg leave
to * REPORT:
Having given the subject committed to their dclibcriUion all
tho attention demanded by its magnitude, and finding the cur-
rency of the country greatly depreciated in value, both at home
and abroad, vour committee deemed it their duty to enquire into
the duses which have produced that result, and also to recom-
mend, as they do herewith most respectfully but urgently, thotto*
ceesory corrective.

that standard in some parts of this republic. They learn fur-
thermore, that specie has been entirely driven (ran circulation
in the channels of business, by the substitution of small bills,
issued in vast quantities, by numerous individuals, in various
parts of the country—in violation of an express statute of con-
gress—-occasioning serious inconvenience from their spurious
character, and, in some enses, actual loss to the community,
frotn the failure of some of the persons issuing such bills to re-
deem them, and from their liability generally, to destruction.
Considering, jfnt, since it is first in importance; as in de-
tail, die depreciation of the promissory notos of the govern-
ment; your committee would beg leave to be indulged in a dis-
cussion of the character ami value of the property which may
be deemed as a fund virtually pledged to redeem the premiers
and liabilities of tho nation. A reference to the asan of Tens
