—manure piles, garbage heap-',

tive measures. Among these,
screens are the most effective;
but also, unfortunately, the
most expensive. Even when the
householder can aii'ord them,
ñies always slip into kitchen and
dining room. Hence the house-
wife whose domain is screened,
as well as her less forehanded
sister of the tenement, is obliged
to adopt some system of whole-
sale insect murder, either by
poison or trapping. It seems
that among the former measures
formaldehyde is remarkably eili-
cient; according to a writer in
Nature, quite the best thing
available. It is relatively cheap,
harmless, and may be obtained
at any drug store. The method
of using it is as follows : A small
artificial lake is prepared in a
saucer or dinner plate and llav-
ored with the formaldehyde so-
lution [one or two teaspoonfuls
to the pint]. To this all flies
are strangely attracted. They
flock to the shore, drink of the
water, and promptly topple into
an aqueous grave, or fly away a
few feet to a dry death on the
