A few of the more conservative
women «till wear the browns nn<l
blacks of the early season, and these
serve ns a background to make tho
other frocks appear still more brll-1

sequins and metallic tissues used this
would hardly appear necessary, but
the lively shades of rose and purple !
nre decidedly charming. A genius at
scenic effects could hardly select a
medley of colors with better results
thau was notuble one evening lately
at n small affair where the rose color
and sllrer tissue frocks' flashed up as
vivid notes In contrast to the brown
and black velvet gowns worn by the
majority of tho women.
One cannot help but note that most
of the formal evening gowns show a
decided tendency to the sheath drap-
ing. and so closely Is the hem druwn

terials serve ns foundations and over-

FOR AFTERNOON OR STREET
As the popularity of bead* I* grow-
ing constantly among wcll-dre**ed
women, dealer* are «bowing «tring* of

fully with the beautifully-colored bag*
and amart little turban*.
and that Is a complete lack of any-
thing bordering on the quaint or un-
sophisticated. Frocks of this type nre
strletly reserved f >r the jeune fllle.
Among the tight, sheathlike gowns
is one described as of swen Jade
tulle over a satin foundation, the
tulle embroidered in motifs of sifter
and tufts of feathers. Another Is of
black lulle embroidered in gold and
black. This model also makes use
of the feather trtmmlnx In black.
Cnllot's evening gowns, recently ex-
hibited In I'nrls, arc described us al-
together wonderful. Ono of black silk
muslin Is shroud*^] In embroidered
tulle. A long piece like a stole trull*

who, however, modifies the shortness
by a narrow pnnel-like train.
I'aqtiin's evening gowns are also
long, un effect produced by elongated
panels on Irregular lengths of mute*
rial.
Hair Ribbon Economy.
Little daughter's hair ribbon* should
be made to do duty us long us pos-
sible. When soiled they may be thor-
oughly cleaned by shaking for a few
seconds, si<y half a minóte, In a solu-
tion of soda—*n teaspoon ful baking
"oila to one quart ot boiling water.
Ulnae the ribbon In cold water, dry
for two or three minutes In a towel
and press with a hot Iron, This proc-
ess removes nil dirt, as suggested, but
docs not Injure the color.
Javelle Water.
This is used in Chinese laundries to
whiten their linen. It will remove
most any kind of stntn. One-fourth
cupful to a boiler of clothes will tnake
them very white. One gallon of wa-
ter, four pounds washing soda, one
pound common soda. Meat all to-
gether, add two pounds slaked lime.

This charming frcck of blue ssrgs
with black satin fringed sash and very
stylish embroidered panel, Is a beau-
tiful model for afternoon or street
wear.
Pretty Trimmings.
A girl's navy serge frock may have
facings of red or Copenhagen blue with
elm ruling effect.
HEAVY BOOTS ARE SMART NOW
Waterproof Footgear With Good,
Thick Sole and Flat Heel, Part of
Milady's Wardrobe.
We are learning font comfort fmm
the army, which Is suld lo have the
most comfortable shoes In the world.
And now It is considered smart to
wear hoots that aro really boots and
not really things of appearance.
A stunning waterproof hoot with a
good thick sole, a flat heel and plenty
of foot room Is part of all well dressed
women'.! wardrobes us a mutter of
course. It Is astonishing how very
smnrt these lienvy boots look. The
stockings which go with them nre of
heavy, wurm cashmere, stylish and
found by all who have adopted them
of such comfort that silk and lisle
are disdained.
The Innter shoe has created the ne-
cessity for a heavier and better stock-
ing. Many young women are wearing
white ribbed cashmere stockings rem-
iniscent of oar grandmother's day
when only white stockings were con-
ibisml rood form. Borne smart hoso,
suitable for goiling. country tramping
ami skating are of tills heavy wool
woven In agreeable heat her mixtures
und worn with high tan boots.
Wash Suite for Children.
Despite the fact that there has been
considerable talk in cotton goods lines
about price cutting and cancellations,
manufacturers of children's wash suits
are still doing a i;< od business. With
the exception of the cases of a few
small retailers there have been very
few cancellations, and llrms are word-
ing on the large orders that they re-
ceived for spring delivery. Milltuiy
styles lire big sellers, and It Is ex-
pc-ied Hint tlicy will continue so dur-
ing the next season.
Demand for Leather Coats.
Makers of women's leather coats are
beginning lo receive muny reorders for
them. One of the firms In this line said
that leather coats for automobile use
were being worn much more tills year,
Light tan sheepskin emits lined with
pluid slfk, and black leather garments
lined with twill nro very popular this
year for motoring npparei.
