On Saturday( March 22, at Taylor before an audience that fill-
ed the auditorium of the city hall, the Waahington county candi*
dato for Congress delivered his opening epeeob of the campaign,
which was cheered repeatedly. A large delegation from the home
town of the candidate, accompanied by the famous 2nd infantry
band, arrived from Brenhatn, on a special train, and contributed
to the enthusiasm of the occasion. Following is the full text of
the speech: Mr. Chairman, Ladies and gentlemen:—We have had

in tliu Congreso of the United State* 1 would be found in the ranks
—battling for hi* success,—as he and 1 have always been close
pergonal and political friends,—but in accordance with the doc*
trine of the xurvival of the fittest, has been promoted,by our splen*
did newly elected President, to a Cabinet position, and Í, in com-
mon, with his thousand r>t friend* in this district and throughout
Texas rejoice with him iu that deserved promotion.
By that, promotion however, a vacaucy has occured in
this Congressional District, sud the Governor has ordered an elec-
ion to till that vacancy for Saturday, April 5th, and the question
