BIG DEAL MADE;
SPUR RANCH LEASED
Swensons Sell 18,000 Head
of Cattle to W. J. Lewis
of Clarendon.
Fort Worth. March 17.—A big
cattle deal was consummated in
Fort Worth yesterday, negoti-
ations for which have been on
several davs, having- started at
Stamfor, Texas. In this deal
the firm of S. M. Svvedson & Sons
of New York; through their State
managers, F. S. Hastings of
Stamford and Charles A. Jones
of Spur, sold to W. J. Lewis of
Clarendon, Texas, all of the cat-
tle on the Spur Ranch aggregat-
ing something like IS,000 head.
The terms of the sale ate pri-
vate, but the deal will run up to
approximately S500.000. In the
transfer the Swensons lease to
Mr. Lewis the great Spur Ranch
embracing some 438.000 acres of
land, and by the terms of the
contract Mr. Lewis will perpetu-
ate the well known Spur brand.
In the contract with Mr. Lewis
the Swensons reserve the option
of selling the Spur farm lands to
actual settlers in small tracts,
there being no restrictions as to
the amount of land that may be
disposed of in this way.
In this deal Mr. Lewis takes a
lease upon the property that was
orriginallv owned by the Espuela
Land and Cattle Company of
England and will in a short time
assume personal control over this
property establishing h)s head-
quarters at Spur, Texas. In the
disposal of this great herd of cat-
tle and the leasing of the Spur
Ranch subject to the encoach-
ment of the sales to the actual
settlers, the Swensons open this
body of land to the actual settlers
and will continue to push the
same with renewed vigor.
This sale and lease, however,
do not put the Swensons out of
the cattle business by any means.
On their propeties, radiating
from Stamford, they still have
something like 25,000 heart of
cattle, and without the Spur
Ranch the firm has more than
350,000 acres of land. It is an-
nounced by the Swensons that
they will push the sale of their
Spur property to the actual set-
tlers, and with other great land
owners following this example,
several million acres of land in
West Texas will be opened up
for farm lands.
