Of BUILDING
IK HOE
Brick Industry Looks to
Residential Market for
Sales Increase.
The proportion of residental build-
in." to nil other types of construction
is growing in America each year. The
statement often is made that one-halt
of America's building expenditure goes
into homos but an accurate check ot
the different classifications of con-
struction shows that in 1925 nearly
62 per cent of the building in the
United States was rcsidental bused
upon floor space area. The proportion
in 1920 was 3* l>er cent; in 1921 —
52 ts-r cent: in 1922—54 per cent and
in 1923—59 per cent and 1924 —UI
per cent.
As a home building nation the
United States unquestionably exceeds'
all others at the present time. Divid-1
ing the various classes of construction |
into four namely rcsidental commer-
cial. industrial and educational in
1925 we find that the second largest
volume was commercial beir- 16 per
cent of the total.
BRICK SALES GAIN.
It is in this great residents! market
that the brick industry of the country
ia looking for its increases during the
coming year. Although brick was free-
ly used in the original colonies as
development struck westward frame
became the prevailing type of home
building.
In recent years the tendency to-
wards lowering the cost of construc-
tion led to the use of many substitute
materials producing walls containing
cavities. Builders desiring brick con-
struetion were under the necessity ot
■-ompnring solid briek masonry with
the hollow walls and the ratio of dif-
ference in cost often was in proportion
to amount of solid material in the
wall.
By the introduction of hollow walls
built exclusively of solid brick units
brick has again come into the field of
low price residential construction.
'These hollow walls of brick are recog-
nised in most building codes and
known to builders as “ideal” walls.
NEW METHOD.
Under the heading of Ideal walls
there are several types. One type uses
the brick laid in the usual manner in
the outside of the wall with the back-
up brick set on edge thus reducing the
quantity of materia! and labor. This
type called the Rolok-bak; permits
tbe use of various bonds. mortar
joints and patterns to which the eye I
is accustomed in brick work. Another
type is called the all-rolok wall in '
which all of the brick are set on edge
i ll's also produces a hollow wall but|
with a distinctive exterior appearance
the larger dimension of the brick be-
ing visible rntherathan the face of the
in ordinary brick work. I

point to the greatest period of devel-

throughout the country that from an
investment standpoint it has no
