More About tho Phelun Assault In
Now York
Nnv YohKJanuary 10 Tho following
ore additional particulars of the cutting
alfray last night In O'Donoran Itossa's
ofllce:
Phelan's clothing was cut In several
places under which there was no wound
Tho four stabs In tbe hack were slight.
Two Just below either shoulder were
two Inches deep Tbe seventh was In
the right side of the neck. Another
penetrated the chest and each arm had
received a thrust. Tho right arm was
almost severed at the shoulder. Tho
physlcans said the patient must have
been very powerful as be showed great
fortitude during tho dressing of Ills
wounds.
Coroner Martin came to the hospital
to take the wounded man's ante mortem
statement. Pbelan said he would give
ntruo story and proceeded as follows:
On last Sunday week an Interview be-
tween myself and the local editor of the
Kansas City Journal was published In
the Journal. The paper Is now In my
pocket. 1 afterwards received n letter
from John T. Kearney asking me to
come to this city. I telegraphed hint
that I would be here January o. When I
arrived to-day I called on hearney and
together we went to O'Donovan Hosstt's
olllce. Itossa vas not (n. A man named
Itocky Mountain O'llrlen cam) in. While
there he shook hands with we in n
friendly way and asked how I wns. He
then left and the man whose name I
think Is Barker came In with n knife In
his hand. Do Immediately approached
and struck at me about tbe chest. I wns
seated In a chair at thetlme and warded
oir the blow. He made more thrusts
and stabbed me soveral times. I sprang
to my feet and ran down stairs. Darker
followed me and cut me again and
agnln. On the street Darker wus
brought before tne. I recognized him ns
tbe man who stabbed me and suppos-
ing he would stab me again I shot him.
1 llrst met Darker on my return from
Europe In August or September Inst. It
was In Itossa's olllce. 1 met bim there
afterward. Kearney ar.n two other men
I do not know were present when I wns
assaulted.
The Identity of tho two men spoken of
could not be established. They with
Kearney fled when the butchery began.
The police found the knife with which
the crime wns committed ou the top
slep of the second flight. Its blnde was
live Inches long and sharpened on both
edges. The handle was twisted with
twine to give a firmer grnsp.
Police Captain Webb and his ollicers
are after additional facts. Three letters
were found In Phelan's pockets. They
will not allow them to be seen.
O'Donovan Itossn came In his olllce
after nlghtlall and pretended Ignorance
of the whole allalr. When told a man
had been backed to pieces In his olllce
he smiled Incredulously. Afterward he
showed consternation and nsked for all
Hie particulars. He was told to go to
the station' hnuso for Information
and he suddenly locked hlsdoor und dis-
appeared O'Donovan Itossn Uvea In
the outskirts of Brooklyn. Aringathls
door-bell to-night brought no response.
A friend of his said he had lately heard
talk of treachery among certain parties
but he was surprised men should so far
forget themselves ns to light lie was
sure Itossa knew nothing about the af-
fair nnd Hint If Hossa had been present
the stabbing would hnve been pre-
vented. New Yoiik January 10 Diehard
Short tho man who stnbbed Captain
Phelnn yesterday In O'Donovan Itossa's
olllce was arraigned In court to-day.
Few people were present. Short ap-
peared calm and collected. Tho pris-
oner was remanded to await the result
of Phelan's Injuries. Later he was seen
In his cell by reporters but he refused
to say anything.
At tbe hospital the physician said
Phelan's condition had Improved since
midnight nnd It wns barely possible he
might recover.
A Warehouse ot tho Sunset Road
Destroyed.
About 11 o'clock this morning nn Im-
mense column of black smoke caught
the attention of people on the streets.
Their doubts as to the cause of It was at
once set at rest by hearing the lire-bells
proclaim the message to tho members of
tbe lire companies that their services
were required. The lire was discovered
to be tbe forage warehouse of the
Sunset railroad which Is situated
next to Martin & Schryver's lumber-
vard. Itr the tlmuthe enulnea nnd hnok-
nnd ladder bojs had arrived on the
scene the whole of this large building
was In a blaze. The surrounding lum
ber also caught tire nnd n box car
loaned Willi hay was also In a mass
or name fortunately the wind was In
a contrary direction to Martin & Schry-
ver's lumber yard or that would have
been Inevitably attacked bv thn
devouring element. The energies
of the lire ocmpany were de-
voted to protecting tbe surrounding
buildings from destruction. Tbe forage
warehouse contained seven carloads of
baled hay. In addition to this loss
which Is not covered by Insurance.tbe
lower portion of the building Is rented
by Messrs. Landa Bros. the contents of
which are also totally destroyed. The
cause of the outbreak la unknown the
night watchman having left it all se-
cure this morning at 7 o'clock and
lodge the key. as usual at the freight-
olllce of Hie Sunset. It Is conjectured
that the lire was n spontaneous combus-
tion of the forage. There wus some de-
lay before the lire company could pro-
cute water but as soon us that was se-
cured they went to work with praise-
worthy energj-. One casunlty occurred.
The cook whose name was not ascer-
tained of a boarding-train that waslv-
Ing before the platform when the lire
broke out attempted t pull another car
out to save It from being destroyed and
in doing so he fell and the wheel broke
ins leg. ji tne time oi tne reporter
leaving the lire was.stlll burning tleicely.
The probable loss to tbe railroad com-
pany Is not exactly estimated but It
will not bo lss than 1001) besides the
loaded car No. UT1 which belongs to
me central memo route uenernt
Stanley seeing the lire detailed troop U
Xlghlb cavalry company U Sixteenth
Infantiy battery F Third light artillery.
This last detachment was at drill and
target practice when tbe lire broke out
and It was dismissed to assist the tire
company. The work these nblo assist-
ants performed In protecting the sur-
rounding property Is not to bo overesti-
mated. At u warehouse opposite Ibe
tire Messrs'. Martin A Schryver had
730110 feet of wire stored and olose by
was Ibe oil house which was filled with
oil.
