The I.iciiT'a readers will reniembtr
that on the night of Hie 01 la of Decem-

a meeting of the Committee of One
Hundred some thieves entered his
stable and stole a pair of. work horses.
He Immediately and by printed card
notified all the Shcrlfls and Constables
for a circuit of 2D0 miles around San
Antonio. Until Sunday January 4 no
clue to tho hones or thieves was d!t
covered. Slr.ce the theft lie has been on
the streets attending to his business as
usual without any apparent embarrass
men!; many thinking Mr. Scott had
given up the Idea of recovering his
stolen horses; but not so; he Is not one
of that kind of men. He was working
silently but surely.
On Wednesday night January 8 Mr.
Scott was seen to leave the train at the
Sunset station where his son had a
buggy waiting for liltn but the buggy
was dispatched by a friend to his bouse
when be and his son disappeared in the
darkness of the night and turned up at
the "bat cave."
The next part of the drama was a col
ored prisoner escorted by the police Into
the presence of Marshal Sbardeln. Af-
ter searching and questioning him be
was placed In the bat cave for the night.
The cause of his arrest was the nonful
fillment of some contract between him
and the Marshal not by Walter Scott as
rroneouslv stated on the followlnir dav
by the Kipress. Marshal SUanleln's
books will testify to the faets.
On the 0th Sir. Scott swore out an

Now. the l.iciiiT readers will be
anxious to know where and how Mr.

gathered around the court bouse raised
a hurrah and said to one of the gentle

PROSPEROUS COLUMBUS
A Description of Twq Splendid Ea
tnpllshments There
Blllor Ban Antonio Main
During my stay at Co'umbus last week
1 took a walk through the city to see
what wits to be seen. Columbus Is the
capital of Colorado county situated on
the west bank of the Colorado river at
tlo Junction o the I.uOrango tap on the
Galveston Harrlsburg and San Antonio
railway. The town contains about 4000
Inhabitants and Is beautifully laid out
with wide streets at right angles and
contains some very respcotable build
ings. In the rehterof the town stands
the court bouse fenced' around with a
neat Iron fence. Tho railway here;
crosses tne Han Antonio river by an iron
bridge of one single span and one block
below the railway bridge tbey are
finishing an Iron bridge of one
span for wagons. This Is a

yard till I came to a foundry where
they do .casting repairing of wagons

Next I came to the Colorado oil mill.

This factory wae burneddown once but
was reoutit again and is now one or the
is
best constructed oil mills 1 have had the
pleasure to visit. The machinery Is
placed In such a way as tc give ample
room around each machine. The capl-

to Kngland and sold to fed stock. They
have machinery for taking off the cot-
ton that banga to the seed which makes
a wide cotton batting. It Is put up In
balea and sold In the North for making
coarse cotton goods. They have a large
supply of cotton seed on hand suf-
ficient to run day and night for four or
live months. They employ IS bands.
The whole of the machinery Is of the
latest Inventions and runs like clock-
work. I saw here for the first time the
new Improved gin taw-jharpener run
by machinery. It doea Us work per-
fectly and with dispatch. Any person
who has sharpened the gin-saws by
nanu can appreciaio ine vaiueoiiuis

About two blocks distant from the oil
factory and on the banks of the Colo-
rado ltlver stands the Columbus "Texas
Meat and li-o Company.' This Is a very
large three-story building In the centre
and a number of other buildings adjoin-
ing or one and two stories and painted a
dark red color. The railway track runs
along the front of the building and by a
mechanical contrivance run by the
steam-power run the refrigf rating-cars
up to the second story whero tne an'-

have a number of cars on Land all the
time. On the onDOSIte side of tho build
ings and parallel to the track Is an alley

gates placed so many feet apart. As It

slide door that rise and a book with an
endless chain that carries the steer to
