IIi-U.m:' visit to Olito so Tar linn been
one grand oration nnd If any of tbe
crowili got away they liavc not hecn
reported.
Wiu.nu ). Kki.i.i:v and Samuel J.
Itamlall have both represented their
congressional districts In Congress from
Philadelphia continuously for more than
20 years anil both have been retioin-
Inateil. Tiik election In Ucorgla does not show
any great Interest cither In State or
National nflalrs so far at the Democracy
Is concerted. Their entire ticket Is
elected without opposition on a very
llght vote.
In iiik lllatne parade In Philadelphia
there were about 1(0000 torches In line
and in order to concentrate the lines
the clubs were massed In platoons of 10
lllei In double rank with only six paces
between the platoons.
Tin: campaign was started by the
Democrats on the old cry of reform and
I ho fraud of 1870 but It has feebly
dwindled down to that of tbe Iniquities
ot prohibition the tarlfl question being
Ignored at all times and tinder all cir-
cumstances. Accoiiiiisa to the American Celt at
the Temperance convention at Chicago
eight of the Cathollolllshops present ex-
pressed In conversation their prefer-
ence for Mr. Hlalnc. The Celt thinks It
slgnlllcant that the majority of the ab-
lest and most patriotic of the Catholic
priesthood are against Cleveland.
Tiik Irish-Americans In their conven-
tion endorse the liepubllcan Presidenti-
al ticket whloh goes to show that the
I'l umed Knight has not lost anything to
speak of jet. A candidate who receives
the endorsement of tbe men who have
heretofore voted against him nan not
be said to be In a very bad condition
Tiik brewers away up In the Xorlh-
west are becoming alarmed at the turn
the Democrats are giving the campaign
by their sllenoe regarding the free trade
polloy ofthe party and realize that that
freo trade progromtno can send foreign
beer and ale up the St. Lawrence and the
lakes and shut up every brewery In the
North.
VitTunv seems to be In the air
wherever Messrs. Illalne and Logan go.
And the enthusiastic receptions they
hate received -o to aliowtlial llm
heart of the people turns to them In
mis i-reaiuenitai struggle. The enthu
alaam cnmmcnceil at riilemrn In -Inl
and It will rot subside until the election
In November.
Tiik action of the Express In bolting
the Democratic county ticket Is the
biggest kind of a straw Indicating the
feeling throughout tbe city and county
against the clique. Local politics will
not be so one sided In this election as
they have been In the past and tbe peo
ple will hare some sort of a show for
their Interests
Dkmociuts usually vote the party
ticket without question but the l'arls
iree Tongue applies the party lash In
following plain terms. It says: "Tell
all llio people round about to go to the
polls in November next and cast a solid
shot for Democracy and Texas regard-
less or who may be on the ticket; It Is
none the less the ticket of tho party; and
that's the end of the law wlthnslmon
iinre Democrat.
Ho It Is with true Democrats. The par-
ty 1ms made Its nominations and that's
enough for them to know. Theic Is hut
one thing left for them to do and that
Is to support the ticket."
Ir tiik statements are true that par-
ties on the ronnty Democratic ticket
paid between $S00 ond $S00 for their
nominations at the hands of the ring It
Is a sad commentary on the degeneracy
of conventions anil shows to what ex-
tent a cllqtto can get hold of and control
the Interests of the public. What does
It suggest to the minds of the citizen
tax payers when men will offer such
cuius fur a nomination as a correspond-
ent sltn d In the Express of Thursday
tnornl' n? If the statements are true It
Isqullo time for tho people to coino to
the front and put an end to such combi-
nations Tiio-k papers that are trying to make
capital nut of an Item In tho Liiiiit re-
garding (iiivcrnor Ireland and IheOreer
county question should quote this paper
correctly before branding the matter as
a campaign He. Mr. Ireland's views
aro liable to different constructions and
the l.intiT simply called "attention to the
fact that his alleged advice to the set-
tlers to resist the United Slates would
not Incline Northern men to put the
Central Uovernmcnt In the hands or
Democrats" Ho did say to them "not
to move except at the point of the
bayonet" and ir that Is a campaign lip
the Governor and not the Liiiiit Is re-
sponsible fur It.
(lovniMitt Ci.kvh.imi'h reception at
Ids home In lliill'alo yesterday was a
very enthusiastic and creditable aflalr.
Much preparation had been made for
tho event nnd the details were appar-
ently curried out In grand style and good
taste. This Is right and proper. If the
people of llufliiln would not honor him
now as the standard bearer of one ofthe
two great parties of the I'tilled States
Irrespective or their political faith ho
would Indeed be poor Umber out of
which to make a President. Mr. Clcu-
land can well be proud of tho reception
he received and the people of IluHnlo
honored themselves by their enthusiasm
and tho magntlkence or their reception
or their fellow citizen Governor Orover

'Douglas and ItreckenrldgH vote com-
bined. Tiik Hubbard City News gives some
good advice In the following: "In' or-
der for all parties In Texas (whether
merchants or farmers) to pull through
the second short crop year without a
grand crash anil break-up In business
circles; there mutt be generous conces-
sions on the part of the wholesale Job-
bers to country merchants; likewise the
merchants In behalf of the farmers.
The farmers In turn ought to pay every
dollar or their obligations due their
merchants that It Is possible to pay. In
order to secure accommodations for the
coming year. If all do the best they can
all around there need be no serious
hardship to any. If harsh measures
prevail and a general squeezing system
Is Inaugurated hard times to many mutt
ensue. On the other hand If each per-
forms his duty as far as lt.Is possible fur
him to do (both debtor and creditor)
all will be well and everybody ought to
be satlillad.
Mil. ArTiirn'H ambition according to
the btatemenls of a veracious correspon-
dent Is to close his administration In n
blaze or social glory us It were. "Of
course" continues tho correspondent
"he wants to wind up his term In a wise
Judicious and patriotic manner hut he
also attaches the greatest Importance to
the gaieties and festivities of the last
months In the White House and you
can look out furjlnnovatlons Jfor grand
and frequent entertainments receptions
and dinners or unrivaled splendor from
the convening of Congreis until the Ith
of March. It Is a safe prediction that
this period will be tbe gayest that the
Kxcoutlve Mansion has witnessed. The
President has given the subject n good
deal of attention nnd will Introduce
new Ideas and revivu forgotten ceremon-
ies and formalities. He proposes to
make the White House the scene of tho
most brilliant social events the grand-
est dinners and largest receptions or the
land and be has already show 11 that he
knows how to do It."
"Tiik wool growers or Ohio" says the
New York Tribune "according to the
latest reports seem Inclined to remem-
ber the treatment they have lecelvcd at
the hands or the Detnocratlo party. This
Is not surprising. There was reason 'or
surprise when part or them after having
been cheated many times by the Demo-
crats nevertheless chose to be deceived
by cheap and empty promises In a Dem-
ocratlo platform. Kver since the wool
question first came Into national poli-
tics the Democrats have made false
promises to the wool growers of Ohio
and other States and at every opportu-
nity have voted ogalnst their Interests
and against protective duties. It ought
nol to have brcn unknown to any wool
producer In Ohio that tbe reduction of
the duty on wool In the revision oflSs:!
was made by Democratlo votes. Upon
the llepubllcans wus forced the alter-
native of abandoning the bill altogether
or accepting It with this feature Yet
the very Democrats who had voted for
the reduction and forced the choice up-
on the llepubllcans thought It sharp
tactics afterward to go Into the State of
Ohio and appeal to the wool growers
on the ground that a Itepubllcan
Congress had reduced tbe duty
on wool. In that dishonest cam-
paign they made formal pledges that
the Democratic party! ir sustained iiy
the people would resloro the duly to the
level ol 1807. The illlllculty Ilh that
parly now Is that It deliberately de-
ceived the-peoplo In making that prom-
ise and deliberately disregarded It In
Congress last winter. When JMr Con-
verse or Ohio a Democratlo member
who made the pledge Intending to keep
It moved to restore the old duty on
wool ho was voted down by his Demo-
cratlo associates. Or tbo 110 members
who voted aye only 33 werc;Dcmocrats
while 112 Democrats voted no. Tho
leader In the opposition to Mr. Con-
verse's motion was Mr. .Morrison of Il-
linois. This tamo Mr. Morrison was
mado Chairman of the committee nnd
reported the platform In tho last No-
tional Democratlo convention. Hut Mr.
Converse who made the motion and
tried In good faith to keep tho pledges
which had been made to the people the
Democratic party has rebuked and pun-
ished for his honesty. In his district It
has nominated another man. If the
woolgrowers cannot dlcovcr from Ihete
fads how far they can trust the Demo-
cratlo party; or what Its real Intentions
are they have less Intelligence than the
sheep they are shearing."
