Tub Duller boom collapsed nt Chicago
in the faco of tho old time wheel horses
of the Democracy.
Tni: man who stops advertising be-
cause business Is dull docs not know the
elementary principles of trade.
Tun last time cholera visited the Uni-
ted States was In lO-'uT. it began at
Toulon In 1953 and quickly traveled to
Marseilles.
The coast country has had an abund-
ance of rain of rain of late nnd the lllo
Grande country lias been very much
overflowed from the same cause.
Tun Sanitary committee should vigor-
ously keep up the work of making tho
city clean nnd healthy. A little good
work now will be amply repaid in tho
future.
Tin: San Antonio Hallroad committee
seem to have made most critical exami-
nations of the coast channels and reefs
around Aransas l'ass and Itockport nnd
are now In Corpus Chrlstl.
Tiicbeat has been Intense the past few
days and the telegraph reports much
distress to sweltering humanity all over
the State. Waco reported three cases of
sunstroke on .Monday and Tuesday
causing ono death.
The Light has received the speech of
Hon. S. B. Maxey in the Senato of the
United States on tho House bill to pen-
sion the soldiers of the Mexican war
and Senate amendments thereto de-
livered on June 21. Texas may well be
proud of Senators Maxey nnd Coke.
Tut question of a protective tarltfwill
have some effect In the South this full
notwithstanding the free trade advocates
of both parties. During the last six
months about $70000000 have been In-
vested In new Industrial enterprises
throughout the South and It Is quite
natural that they should desire protec-
tion In Its fullest sense.
Govr.n.Noi Inni-AMi has about as soft
a thing politically as usually falls to
the lot of nion so far as his rcnomlnn-
tlon Is concerned. It Is true he has
some opposition but It will not have
any appreciable effect In the convention.
With about three-fourths of the county
conventions pledged to him he certain-
ly can keep cool and complacent.
Texas Is a banner Demoeratlo State
but the growth of the party has In no
manner been In proportion to the
growth In population and Influence and
If there were more Wash Jones kind of
men In the political field the great
majority of tlio Democrats would bo
evened up very materially because the
people are dally becoming more Inde-
pendent and disinclined to obey the be-
hests of the machine.
There has been an Appreciable change
In the publlo feeling regarding money
matters bolh locally and In the centers
of trade the past few days. Confidence
teems to have been fully restored nnd
stocks are again advancing in n health-
ful manner. In Texas the main part of
the hard times have been passed by
reason of the good grain crops the
revenues from the cattle drive and the
prospects of a good yield In cotton.
It is a lame excuse offered for Mr
Templeton who Is a candidate for At
torney General that his private business
liarj nothing to do with his political
schemes. If Mr. Templeton rents a
house for tho purposes of gambling In
direct violation of the law and receives
the rents and profits therefor he Is prao-
j tlcally a law breaker and while It may
" be true that business and politics do not
mix yet It would be much more to the
credit of tlioSiatB that the rntin who sill

Issue. The tarlll plank Is a subterfuge
n delusion and a snare and Is neither
free trade nor protrcllon. It Is ono of
the peculiar straddles for which the
Democratic party has lately been guilty
of showing that Us leaders arc afraid to
go heforo tho people on an Issuo fulr and
square. The committee were In session
30 hours and they brought forth a docu-
ment that a political weather cock like
Hen Duller could not endorse and It
goes without saying that ho would en-
dorse anything which promised defeat
to the itepubllcan party.
Tin: Ilrarorla Independent says: "The
Heuato appropriations committee has In-
structed Senator Coke to report faor-
ably on the Kads bill for the lmproe-
mciit of Ualrestnn bullion If a like
consideration should be given tho bill In
the IIoiiro Torn Ochiltree's chances for
reelection will be very materially
strengthened. A great cry was raised
In Oalveston because Tom had the reg-
ular appropriation stricken out und n
considerable opposition was rrentcd
among the laboring men. Hut should
the prospects of the passage of tho Ends
bill grow as the campaign progresses It
will be a very hard matter Indeed for
nny Democrat to beat Tom Ochiltree.
If he accomplishes enough for the Oal-
veston people to feel encouraged they
will do all In their power to elect hlui.
Yes from all Indications Tom will bn a
hard man to beat."
" Willi i: good temperance people are
decrying liquor'' says one of the leading
physicians of Connecticut "they seldom
stop to think how much harm Is being
done by Ihcabiiscof a beverage to which
many of them aro devoted . I Just camo
from attending tho case ofn lite- ear-old
babo who Is ruined forllfo by Its parents
Indulging It In lea drinking. Tho child
became very ncnousand dyspeptic and
they sent for inc. I asked them how
much tea the child drank. ' About two
cups nt each meal and several between
meals' was the reply on see" con-
tinued the doctor " they left the tea pot
stand on the stove all day. Thus tho
tannic acid Is extracted which serves to
turn the linings of the stomach Into
leather and brings on dyspepsia and
"kindred diseases Yes you will And
hundreds of women young girls nnd
aged women nnd occasionally a man
who havo completely ruined their ner-
vous system by the excessive use of
common lea. It will be n blessing to
mankind when n temperance crusade
can spam wind enough from Its nttnek
on alcohol to assail tea."
ioi:iiiiiiiii.NrwrltIngof the Wash
ington monument says: "Tho itruc-
has now reached a height of Jill
feet and tho usual subterfuges are be-
ing mado to continue the structure 20
feet higher nt which point nnother and
last chsngo will be made as only live
courses will then remain to rnlso the
structure to n height of VK) feet. From
this point the pyramidal roof (55 Icet
high) will begin. All the stones which
lmve been laid thus far havo a smooth
Unlsh on the Inside; but the stones of
the next course Jut a little further and
so on these corbels forming the support
of the Interior arch which will be the
base of the pyramidal roof. It is ex
pected the monument will reach a
height of MO feet In less thnn two
months' time. Steps will then he tuken
to commence the work upon the roof
nnd while that work Itself will not oc-
cupy inoro than three weeks the prep-
arations for It w 111 be so delicate nnd of
such a different character from nny
heretofore made that it will be eomo
tluie-before the laying of stone la begun.
lly tho llrst of November it Is confi
dently expected that the stmcturo will
bo tinder cover nnd practically com-
pleted. "There will be some llnlshlng touches
to bo made perhaps but these can wait
until next year if necessary. Very de-
tailed and carefully prepared plans show
how the roof Is to bo constructed and
everything lins been arranged In ad-
vance." Tumi: Is no question but what Mr.
Walnc's nomination appeals loudly to
the Irish heart nnd that he wlllllnd
many supporters among them because
of his Great American Ideas. The Bos-
ton Journal publishes the following let
ter on this same subject: "I glvo here
with my name residence and the names
of persons known to you or easily acces-
sible who will testify as to my standing
financially nnd morally not for publica-
tion but that you may judge somewhat
as to the worth of my testimony. 1 am
Irish by birth American by naturaliza-
tion have lived in New Kngland nearly
Ml years pay taxes on real nnd personal
property never held or asked for office
voted the Democratic ticket loyally and
am entirely qualltled to get ft living and
something over. Far from the track of
the professional politician who trades In
the sympathy or feelings of Irish voters
What I say Is this: I shall vote for
lllalno next November if I have lire be-
cause I believe him to be by all odds the
greatest llvlng'representatlvo of what n
great American should be in the eyes of
50000000 people nt home and 20 times
as many abroad. I am willing to pay
my share of nny tax or expense that may
result from carrying out such a policy as
becomes n great and freo people and a
great and free government a govern-
ment not wholly given up to shopkeep-
ing. And I say furthermore I havo
have good reasons for believing that In
New York Connecticut Massachusetts
and Illinois not less than 80000 citizens
who have always voted the Democratic
ticket will vote for lllalno next Novem-
ber. The newspaper men of Independ-
ent stripe and the 'unco good had bet-
ter look this statement In the future"
"Tun potency of good "crops nnd of
other Important commercial Influences
Is generally underrated" says tho New
York Tribune. "A lorge yield means
an enormous addition to tho available
wealth of the country. For Illustration
let us suppose that the needs of our pop-
ulation of (17000000 can be moderately
supplied but no more when the yield
of wheat Is 40000001X1 bushels of corn
12000110000 bushels of cotton 0000000
bales and of other products In llko pro-
portion. Such n yield let usay sulllees
to feed nnd clothoourpcoplc.and to buy
what they need abroad. Hut Instead
there comes n yield about one quarter
greater; the gross product of agricul-
ture rises for example from $2400000-
000 to S;l000000000. Our needs having
been previously supplied tho tncrcaso
of 5500000000 or $000000000 Is so much
added to our clear profit on tho year's
work anil when markets can be found
for products the entire value of that In-
crease is added to the available wealth
of tho country. In short wo are In the
position ofn merchant who can barely
cover expenses with n moderate busi-
ness but can makaan enormous prolit If
tho business becomes n little larger.
This car's crops tiro going to add n very
large sum to the cleur p roll I of the coun-
try unless we nllow speculation to
slaughter our foreign Irado ngaln. With
$.00000000 moro to be applied to tho
development of resources the building
of houses nnd mills nnd rnllrnads or to
he Invested Insecurities nn Impetus will
certainly he given to nil markets mid all
branches of trade.''
