Eyiky United States Scna'or U to have a

contingent fund. There certainly ii no alyle
about the members of the Mouse if they do
not call for a slice of the same pie and gel it.
From a bus'ncsi point of view the Senate
have kicked a considerable chunk of fat in the
fire when they voted to turn the valuable and
rapidly increasing commerce of Mexico over
to England and Geimany. Texas will lose
many dollars by the narrow-minded policy.
Sl'RAKiNR ol the provision in the Constitu-
tion prohibiting any appropriation for the
New Orleans fair the Jefferson Jimplccute
says : " Such a constitution should be wiped
out at one for so loner as it stands it will be
a blot on civilization." .
Tint Legislature should now hasten to pais
a resolution denouncing John Hancock and
end orslng Cloiemor Ireland. Another speci-
men of servdity cannot damage the Legisla-
ture and it has abased itself too much to
affect independence and telf respect at thli
time.
The records of the District court of llexar
cotinly continue to furnish ample proof of the
truth of the old adage of "marrying in hasle
anil repenting at leisure." There is no falling
elf in the number of married people who dc
sire to be released from their marriage vowi
so that Ihey may try a second cast ol their net
inln the 'ea of matrimony. '
Tine guthing manner in which the New
Voik sun has pressed Mr. Holman for the
Presidency has given currency to the report
that Mr. Charles A. Dana has been attacked
with softening ol the brain. The diseasi
showed itself when he went over to the
Democracy and has steadily increased ever
sncc.
Al OUR neighbor the Times assserU very
posillveiy that the (Jalvcston News is not
Democratic newspaper it is in order for the
Times to define by metes and bounds what
constitutes a Democratic paper so that it can
be identified upon the ground. What const!.
tutu a Democratic newspaper is smartly
mixed just now.
Tin Rev. Joseph Cook declares that then
arc only five newspapers in the United" States
that a self-respecting American would recom-
mend a friend to read. This is either a whole-
sale slander of huge proportions or a case of
impenetrable stupidity. The newspapers will
compare most favorably wilh the preachers as
educators and moralists and a preacher does
himself no credit by sneering and villifying
newspapers in the gross. Mr. Joseph Cook
Is doubtless a I'harisee of the first grade.
Ti oldadaje nt "a burnt child dreads
the fire" does not seem to hold good with
the Ilouiton Tost and Galveston News In
the matter of Interviews and the Hancock
business is very much the same as the Ueagan
Culberson and olher interviews published
last summer wherein these papers made
statements that were as positively denied by
each the victim and the correspondent
should e.ch preface his remarks with "I do
solemlr swear" etc- and then the Dublic
woult" In a slight degree place some reliance
in th published statements.
The people ot Chicago have been greatly
bothered and perplexed at the singular fact
that alt the beef cattle break out into a dole
ful bellowing the very instant that they reach
the coaorate limits and all sorts of imlii.
tioni have been vouchsafed by the Chlcaco
press the bulk of them being Incomprehen-
sible from the mingling of slang and scientific
terms. Emory Storrs Is consulting the law
books' m the subject. The cause of Ibis dote
ful bellowirg of the beef cattle is the enor-
mous site of the shoes worn by Chicago
women rumor havirg it that only lo women
in the city being able to squeeze their feet
into number seven.
Tiu Nashville American thinks the free
traders can not count on the South and says t
The ambitious free trade Democrats who it
is said are arranging n programme for a new
sectional free trade party to embrace the
States of the West and South will find them-
selves running counter to the following im-
portant Southern districts; Kice In South
Carolina coal and Iron in Alabama Georgia
Tennessee North Carolina and Virginia
sugar in Iouisiana sugar and wool in Texas
and cotton and woolen mills in several Stales
to say nothing of numerous other manufac-
uilng enterprises. It will not be safe to count
(Oil any sujiposed antagonism to these enter-
prises by the farmers who are their neigh
ors for the farmers are drawing more prolit
from these customers than they ate ever likely
o get out ol the politicians who are bidding
or their voles through their supposed antag-
onism to olher producers."
The political situation as it appears from
the extreme protectionist standpoint is thus
presented by the Washington cormpondr
of the I'hiladelphia Times : A numWr of
prominent Democrats have come to Wash
ington within the last few days. Regarding
th effect on the party's prospects resulting
from the domination ot the free traders in the
House of Representatives they agree in say
ing it is disastrous. The prospect of the
Democracy electing the I'resident before so
hopeful was suddenly obscured by Carlisle's
election and subsequent action in connection
with the avowals of the leaders In the hour of
their triumph. "I have come on here" nid
a New York Democrat "lo learn for myself
what truth there lain the representations that
our party has fallen into the hands of those
hose ultimate object Is free trade and uho
if Ihcy become reconciled to the government
are animated by the purpose of controlling it
for objects sectional and personal. I find to
say the least that too much if this is true
especially as relates to free trade." Said
another from Pennsylvania: "I find down-
right hostility existing toward our great in-
terests with Mr. Randall virtually proscribed
as an unsound Democrat and that the word
Is out that hereafter we must follow the
leaders who so lately led In the field against
the Union or leave the patty."
That ex-Governor Roberts made a good
executive as far as the word goes no one will
deny but that hi Is the only man In all Texas
or in the Democratic party that can fill the
executive chair successfully and satisfactorily
to the State is not true. There is plenty of
good material younger men and men who arc
in sympathy with the spirit of the age all over
the Stale who would make as good a Governor
he did and better. The Bourbon parly be
ing the dominant one it is not supposed for a
moment that the opposition or Republicans
can or will have a hand in shaping such an
event but to the Light it does not look par
ticularly creditable on the part ol the Democ-
racy that when they get into trouble they
have no faith in but one man and one who
has in a measure lived out the time of his ac
tivity. This attempt at tills day to again
bring the "old alcalde" lo Ihe front ought to
suggest much hod for thought to Ihe rank
and file and younger members of the IJourbon
parly and gives a hint that activity brains
progress and business is very much below
par when it comes to choosing leaders to rep-
resent them in the affairs of State and the
men who originated the present movement
could not more plainly tell the great mass of
voters that they are looked upon simply as
cattle.
"One of the most disastrous customs of
Texas" says the McGregor l'laindealer "is
its credit system. Everything Is bad about it
and the homestead law of the State is the
prime cause. The wholesale merchants send
out drummers to drum the retail merchants to
purchase and then the Sheriff drums them for
Ihe pay. It would seem that experience
would teach our retail merchants to be more
careful but every day we see that some one of
them has failed. Ilut the wholesale merchant
does not fail yet they both sell on time. The
retailer has no protection while the wholesale
merchant has ample. Even if our merchant
does not fail all his profits are on his books
where is the evil! We answer it lies In the
credit system. If all transactions were made
on a cash basis it would soon do away with
cotlon raising and new and more remunerative
Industries would soon be taken hold of.
Farmers would learn to prepare for coming
needs they would depend on their own effort
but now they go in debt all that a big crop of
cotton would pay out but the cotton is a poor
crop compared with their calculations and they
can't pay the retailer and the wholesale dealer
sends on and closes our country merchant out
a new one opens up and he likewise learns
who can be trusted after it is too late. There
Is no class that would receive greater benefit
from a strictly cash business than the farmer
lor he would live within his Income and save
the enormous price he now pays for credit.
To Husbands.
From tho Christian Unl on.
Your wife Is entitled to her share of your
income. It is her income as well as yours.
John Stuart Mill was a cold blooded philoso-
pher not a warm blooded sentimentalislj and
John Stuart Mill says that the natural division
of labor In the household which assigns to
the husband Ihe earning of the money and the
wife Ihe administration of Ihe home is an
equable division of the labor gtvinc to the
two ordinarily an about equal share. To dole
out money grudgingly to your wife is more
than ungenerous; it is unjust. The treasury
is a common treasury. You and she are
commercially speaking partners. She has a
right to a reasonable proportion of your Income-
to have it regularly! to have it without
hesitation reluctance or question! to spend It
in her own discretion and not to be Called
upon to account for every dollar before sh
receives another. We have received several
letters lately on this subject on behalf of
wives subjected to a petty and uninteational
despotism by their husbands. Some of these
letters can not be read without maltinc the
despotism worse.
