' Tin Gatesvllle Advance announces Its In-
tention not to support Tilden Tor resident.
Poor Tilden Is cone up.
Tiiire was a little meetlne; of cattle men at
Gainesville the other day and (he Independ
ent says $3000000 were represented.
A COLO snsp is a'creat promoter of the sale
of overcoats and marriage licenits. Two per
sons require no more cover than one does.
Ir Tin District court would set more cases
for trial each day it might save the count;
some money in the pay of jurors and feeding
prisoners.
Tins item of gratuitous advice is from the
Roclcport Transcript : "There is plenty of
water on Aransas Pass to float all the bonds
of theSsn Antonio Culf railroad."
Ark the people of San Antonio willing to
have their river turned into a sewer the water
ruined for bsthiog and washing and the banks
made feculent with cxercmentitious nastiness!
Alamo plaia proves "as clear as mud1
what excellent officers San Antonio posses
ses. Fish Commissioner Lubbock should
stock Alamo plasa lake with carp so as to
utilise inch a splendid sheet of water.
Till proposition of Dr. F. llerff to run
sewers into the San Antonio river should meet
with no favor from the people unless such
sewers be emptied into the river clean below
the city. It will only augment the sickness
and befoul the river.
Colonel Nat Mitchell one of the
heroes of Ssn Jacinto and widely known in
Texas has married Miss Cornelia Lewis of
Arthur Illinois. The Oloncl has hit on the
true plan of uniting the North and the South
and we wish him joy.
Jesse James haviog been murdered
through the efforts of Governor Crittenden
and Frank James being in jail we wonder
upon whom train rubbing will be laid now.
Perhaps the ghost of Jesse James Is leading
a fresh band of train robbers in Mexico.
We feel bound to assure the people of
other States that Texas Is fully supplied with
doctors lawyers school teachers bookkeep
ers clerks deadbeats dudes gsmblers pros
tltutesand fence cutters. Farmers laborers
mechanics and servants are wanted very much.
The city of Dallas being bound to seem to
h: growing has just divided herself into six
wards. It reminds one of the negro s reply
who upon being asked if 18 eggs were not
too many to set a dunghill hen upon said
"Well Its a good many but 'Old Speck' will
have to spread herself." Dallas is frying to
spread herself in wards or in the woods.
Will the people elect progressive council-
men who will promote the growth and pros-
perity of the city or men who would be mere
dead weight. It would help the city in
case we had street railways in operation on
half the streets in the city; It would increase
the value of real estate and enable people to
get about without wading across the streets at
the reputed crossings.
One hundred years ago the esport of cotton
from the United States was a mere trifle. The
seeds were then picked out by hand after
supper by the women and children but the
invention of tbe cotton gin by Stephen Whit-
ney gave an Impetus to the cultivation of
cotton which revolutionised the world and
drove flax and linen out of the field by tho
cheapness of cotton goods
The mire announcement that the street
railway company will run a new line In any
part of the city is sufficient to give property at
big a boom as any other agency and benefits
all owners alike. This fact Is Illustrated In
Galveston where the Print says that since
the new street railway of that city Is an as-
sured fact that property In the southwest por-
tion it rapidly changing hands it being taken
for building purposes.
Dr. V. O. Kino gives a dramatic account
of the robbery of the train In Mexico on
board of which he was a passenger. Dr.
King was out cn the ground on his way to
the help of the crippled engineer when one
of the robbers punched an Enfield rifle to his
temple on one side while another jabbed a
six-shooter to the other temple and jabbered
Mexican at htm. We congratulate the Doctor
on escaping from his ugly predicament with
life and purse Intact.
The pronunciamenlo Issued by the fence
cutters of Coleman county It out and out
Douibooitm. It announces opposition to
people from other States settling In Texas and
to "taxing Ihe people for the purpose of edu-
cating niggert." We are glad to have Ihlt
proof that the fence cutters are Democrats of
the " ttralghtest ted" and we hope Governor
Ireland will make a note of It. A split In
the Democratic patty of Texat is now Inevi-
tablethe stampede hat begun and no "round
up" li possible.
The Galveston papers are powerful touchy
on the subject of a rival and they quickly re
lent any allusion that it made that either
Houston or San Antonio stand in that posi
tion. For years Galveston has claimed a pop-
ulation she never had and while all other
cities in the Stale have spread in the way of
population and business she has apparently
stood still. All Texas would rejoice to see
Galveston the great city of the gulf coast but
until she depends upon herself and exhibits
through her newspapers some of the generos
ity of her neighbors she will not be entitled
to the good wishes expressed for her advance-
ment. It seems that the first wife of Senior Tabor
who helped him to make his fortune was
divorced from him through the influence of
his money as she herself assured the Judge
who tried the case she did not want a divorce.
Tabor hat married again and hat a regiment
of hit new wife's relations quartered upon
him and there would be retributive justice in
their keeping him In "hot water and pluck'
tng out his pin leathers. When a man
amasses a fortune and then repudiates the
wife of his youth who shared his poverly and
helped to lay the keel of his fortune It it a
tafe thing to tet him down at a brute in all
respects. Tabor should be damned by public
opinion.
So FAR as it affects the growth progress
and prosperity of San Antonio the election of
hall a dozen Aldermen is of more conse
quence than the election of a President. The
entire city Is interested In this matter. The
wards wherein Aldermen are toon to be
chosen are by no meant the only parties
who have a deep concern in the matter for
the rotes of Aldermen are not confined to
questions affecting their wards but affect the
entire city. Real estate owners would ex
perience a great shrinkage of values in case
the present boom should suddenly collapse
and are therefore vitally interested In push
log forward the spirit of progress by all avail
able meant. Cities cannot afford to ttand still
much less to retrograde as that keeps away
both population and capital. The merchants
cannot afford to let the city come to u ttand
still far less to begin a downward course(or
to do to would divert their trade to other
pointt. The mere belief and opinion that a
town or city it growing and likely to growit
no small help to it at it abundantly shown by
the history of San Antonio. Our Idea is to
push ahead and to adapt our ways' to the
growing condition of the cily not impede Its
growth by unprogressive ways and notions
The mechanics and laboring people are also
inteiested in having San Antonio moving for.
ward prosperously on the current of progress.
If the building boom was to die out not only
would wages tumble down one half but there
would be no employment lor two
thirds of the mechanics and laborers
at present employed at fair wages.
liackmea boarding house keepers hotels
restaurants butchers bakers etc. are one
and all deeply interested In keeping up the
growth and progress of the cily in pushing
ahead improvement of the cily. The city
government may be a stimulus or a make
weight and a clog. Whether It be the one or
the other will be owing to the men who com
pose the Council; there are progressive men
and unprogressive men; men of vim and
energy and laggards and drones; men who
look to the future and men who are born
croakers; men who have sense and judgment
and others who are only bundles of preju
dices obttinacy and narrowness. The first
class Is the sort San Antonio needs In her
cily government the last would handicap her
progress. Kings seem to breed in city gov-
ernments as maggots breed In old cheese.
Corruption is the outgrowth of rings. Four
Police Commissioners have just been Indicted
In St. Louis several municipal agents are un-
der Indictment In New York. No tool of a
ring should be made an Alderman in San
Antonio; the people should tee to that matter.
No slave of the rich nor any mere dema-
gogue should be elected. Progressive ten-
tible discreet jutt and prudent men who
would not work a corrupt job nor oppose an
Improvement from mere blind prejudice and
contrariness. Political affinities are of minor
Importance In city affairs. The Light it for
men of progress purity ol life and purpose
and of good business tente and It shall op-
pose all cliques and rings with all Its might
and strength.
Kelly's Revenge.
From tho Chicago Inter Ocean Itcpublloao
Governor Cleveland must go. As a candi-
date for President be It at dead at Ben But-
ler or Allen G. Thurraan. The falling off In
tbe Democratic vote of New York endt hit
boomlet. John Kelly has scored another revenge.
