Chicago November 9. The Hermans of
this ciljr to-nicht held a secular as ditlin-
uished from a religious celebration of the
four hundredth anniversary of the birth of
Martin Luther. A Jewish rabbi was among
the speakers.
New Ori.kans La. November 9. A six-
year-old Italian girl died of yellow fever To-
day In the Charity hospital three hours after
admittance. The child wjs of a family of
emigrants who. with others came here after
Undine at Vera Cruz where they did not ob-
tain employment.
Lincoln November 9. Testimony fer'the
defense In the .ora Hums trial rested this
moraine after proving an alibi for Carpenter
on Ihe night preceding his arrest and thus
contradicting the story told by one of the de
tectives the state men began to submit
testimony in rebuttal.
Chicago November 9. All the railroads
running out of this city will adopt the new
schedule of standard time commencing on
next Sunday with the possible exception ol
the Burlington road which has not yet de-
cided. The time for this or the central divis-
ion is nine minutes later than Chicago lime.
San Francisco November 9. Argument
has been commenced in the .Supreme court in
a suit brought by Ihe heirs of the late Sarah
Ann Dorsey of Louisiana for the purpose of
setliog aside the will by which Mrs. Doricy
left her property to Jefferson Uavls. It is
maintained that the testatrix was subject to
undue influence.
Younostown O. November 9. A special
from Newcastle Pa. says : This morning a
scaffold 78 tcet from the ground at Kels
Brothers blast furnace cave war. lames
Eagan was instan'ly killed and William Troy
and A. Mcllride badly injured. Martin Bur-
lington fell 12 feet and then caught hold of a
projecting beam and was saved.
Cincinnati O. November 9. A Forest
special says : At 3 o'clock this morning Mr.
Speidel a baggage mister at Ihe depot was
called by the Marshal to arrest a burglar in M.
W. Gages' store. Speidel entered the window
and was shot by the burglar aod fatally
wounded. The burglar was arrested and re-
cognized as Maurice Holly a resident here.
Buffalo November 9. A gale this after
noon blew down a four-story building being
constructed by Jacob Dold and 12 men were
buried in the ruins. Killed: Jacob Scoen-
inai winiam ccken lotepn liraaei car-
penters; John Otto laborer and Charles
Fintner. Seven others were seriously injured.
Madison November 9. Governor
Kuik has called a meeting of the Capitol
Building commission to consider the details of
yeiteidsy's disaster in the collapse of a por-
tion of the new capitol building. The con-
tractors and architects were examined and as
the result of the conference it was decided to
have a committee of experts institute an In-
quiry. The coroner's jury held an inquest on
the bodies of five of the dead. Three of the
wounded are expected to die.
Chicago November 9. The Illinois Cen
tral railroad management has decided not to
adopt the new standard time soon to go Into
effect but is getting out a time schedule based
on Chicago time. The reason given for this
is that its numerous suburban trains must
necessarily be run on Chicago lime and to run
its other trains on different time would mix up
matters and Increase the danger of accidents
and collisions between trains running by a
different schedule. If the city of Chicago
should adopt the standard time the road will
do likewise.
Washington November 9. The French-
American Claims Commission has made the
following awards against the United States:
A. G. Delisle New Orleans $3500; heirs of
F. Bataille New Orleans $91; Joseph Du-
pont riaquemine $350; Solomon Block
Bon Force $3000. 'I he following claims
against the United States were disallowed:
A. Gervals Avoyelles; Joseph Levy Ascen-
sion; K. Jacobs New Orleans; F. Delhaste
i.oncoraia; Artnur Levy Manzauya; Joseph
Levey Napoleon; Victor Merle Chacola.
Boston November 9. This morning
Officer Kimball hearing a woman's cries from
Bartlett place room No. 1 Immediately in-
vestigated the cause. In the corner of the
room was the occupant of the tenement
named Macintosh suflerlng from severe
bruises. His wife was in the middle of the
room with her forehead broken in and other
wounds. Close by her lay Mrs. Frank Bark-
ley severely cut about the face. Mrs. Mac-
intosn may die. she is encicnte. frank
Barkler. the husband of one of the women In
jured was arrested as the assailant. They
had separated.
Ngw York November 9. The General
Missionary committee of the Methodist Epis-
copal church has made the following appro-
priations: Montana $1000; Indian Terri-
tory $1000; New Mexico $13900; Utah
$12625; Narthwest Nebraska $5840; North
west Norwegian $0500; northwest Swedish
$7500; uregon Scandinavian 120000; Colo-
rado German $2800: Central German $4500;
Lnicago uerman 93500; Columbia Kivcr
German $800; East German $5000. The
Indian and Norwegian missions were classed
under the head ol Scandinavian.
Galvrston November 9 The Gulf Col-
orado and Santa Fe in pursuance of the re-
duction of force referred to a day or two ago
has discharged between 300 and 400 men
along Its line. The cause li the stopped con-
struction and dullness in railroad business.
The Galveston Harrisburg and San Antonio
and Galveston Houston and Henderson
roads are also curtailing their forces. The
Lorgnette base ball club which was so suc-
cessful in the early part of the season and
which won the championship of Southern
Texas Is being reorganized for the coming
season. Almost all the old members will be
retained and a first-class pitcher and catcher
secured.
Norfolk November 9. The white people
of Southampton county are apprehensive of
an outbreak of the negroes. Telegrams have
been received from Portsmouth asking for as-
sistance in the event of trouble and the
Mayor has a posse of citizens ready if the
summons come. Yesterday a drunken negro
told a servant In a white family that at 12
o'clock last night 1000 negroes intended to
slay every white person in Southampton
county. The whites at Newsom Franklin
Boykln'sand Branchville sent out scouts to
learn what was going on and it was notice-
ble that not a negro was to be seen in their
usual places. This gave additional color to
the report and ihe women and children were
taken to the woods and guarded. The ttle-
gram states that negroes who work at the
railroad station have not been seen since yes-
terday and the people are preparing to defend
their homes. Thus far no trouble is known
of and It Is impossible to ssr whether there is
any just ground for the eiisting excitement.
Southampton county was the scene years be-
fore the present of a bloody slave insurrec-
tion and It is not Improbable that Ihe tradi-
tions of that time have something to do with
the prevailing apprehensions.

The moral side of it: "And so Miss Ful-
ler you think Miss Johnson did wrong In go
on the stage in tights!" "Indeed I do. Why
her limbs are as thin as pipe stems."
"Now my little boys and girli" ssld a
teacher "I want you to be very still so still
that you can hear a pin drop." In a minute
all was silent when a little boy shrieked out :
"Let her drop I"
"So yourhuiband is a contractor. In what
particular line is he?" "In the debt line."
"In the debt lline?" "Yes be has contracted
about $looooworth of debts during the last
two years. Ever) body says he is very suc-
cessful in his business."
Milwaukee society is doing Its best to keep
up with the procession. The society column
of one of its pspers the other day contains
the pleaslnr Intellirence that "Grasshopper
Jane" a Seminole Indian is visiting her
friends in that city.
The little exhibition of enthusiasm on the
part of Mrs. Case who when her husband's
flyer JayF.yc-See beat SL Julian threw her
arms around the old man Case's neck and
kissed him in the presence ef thousands is
likely to carry her name down through his-
tory with the phenomenal trotter's. This
little act is receiving as much notice as Ihe
feat of the Wisconsin horse.
There were five famous Generals st the
close of the war in high command Grant
Sherman Meade Thomas aod Sheridan
Meade and Thomas are dead and Sheridan is
the last of the other three to take command of
Ihe army as General. He is still In tse prime
of life able if occasion should demsnd it to
take the field in person; but there is tittle
probability that he will ever be called upon
lor further active service. There have been
including Sheridan 14 Generals in command
of the srmy not all of the rank of General
and of these five obtained command during or
since the war of the rebellion.
