About midnight last night a young man
was teen standing on the north tide of the
Commerce Street bridge gaiing meditalirely
In the water. Captain Goodrich and Mr.
Walters saw him as they passed and there it
reason to believe that ihe indivlduil had one
leg retting on the fencing at the time. Soon
alter a splash was heard and Mr. Marx of
the firm of Wolf & Marx who was returning
from Ihe theatre rushed to the side of the
bridge in time to tee a man tise and sink
again intj the water. Newt wat conveyed to
the police and Captain Goodrich and Police-
man Zcnk searched the river with lanterns
and were unable to find any clue to the sui-
cide or to the cause of the splash.
This is all that It known of the matter and
many persons are inclined to believe
that Ihe matter is a hoax but the
positive statement of Ml. Marx places that
view of the esse out of the question. Thus
far nothing has been learned of the supposed
suicide and no inriury hat been made for any
minion perton but the river hat not been
scarthed yet and no effort made to recover
the body if at tuppotcd tome young man
tuicldcd. There are those who fear that If
the young man hat suicided his body will not
be recovered but will furnish food for the es-
caped alligator that Is known to be in the
river.
The police do not believe that aay one has
suicided and are evidently acting under that
I impression but when the Light representa
tive interviewed Mr. Marx this morning that
gentleman said that he was quite certain that
tome one fell into the water but how or why
he got there he did not know. All he knew
was that he was returning from the theatre
and heard a splash. lie rushed to the bridge
side and looked Into the water. There he taw
the form of a man rise to the turface of the
river and disappear in the abyis below.
The young man wat respectably dressed
and If Mr. Marx's ttatement Is to be believed
he certainly got into the water but whether he
leaped from the bridge with a suicidal intent
or accidentally tell from it Is at mysterious at
present as his fate. From the fact that the
supposed deceased wat teen by teveral per-
sons ptior to getting into the water and not
Identified it is inferred that the man is .1
ttranger.
MIDNIGHT THIEVES AGAIN.
Last night Bryan Callaghan Recorder of
San Antonio having changed his clothes and
carelessly throwing them on the bed left the
house. Shortly after with the silent tread ol
one who "fears the very whispers of the wind'
and with eye fixed with an Intensity of gate on
the dwelling before him approached the mid-
night thief. All still! all quiet I the
abored breathing of a sleeper alone
breakt the silence of the silent night.
The door it opened with a hurried
look and with a hurried gratp the clothes
lately worn by the Recorder are in the pos-
session of the thief. The floor slightly creaks.
With that fear of discovery known so well
and felt to keenly by the criminal he stops.
It it nothing 1 another moment and he passes
away into the darkness.
Mr Callaghan returned late that night and
not until the following morning did he dis-
cover his coat vest and pants in the yard
while a valuable gold watch and chain a
diamond pin and other articles had disap-
peared. A $75 check had been left In the
darkness. Every effort will be made to cap-
ture the thieves.

A DISPUTED JUDGMENT.
Mr. U n. Thompson Triad and Convicted
for gelling the rollc Oaiatte mid
l'ollce Maws.
In Ihe District court yesterday Mr. L. 11.
Thompson bookseller of the Main plaia was
charged under indictment with selling the
Police Gazette and Police News without hav-
ing obtained the required license to do so.
The defendant's counsel objected to the In-
dictment on two grounds. First that the
L. gtslatmc could not make any distinction
bstween publications or make the license for
selling one publication greater than the
license charged for another pnbllcation.
Second that if the greater license was based
upon the Immorality or Indecency of the
paper referred to such publication could not
be licensed. The court over-ruled the objec-
tion and the trial proceeded. A judgment of
guilty was entered and a fine of $750 Im-
posed. An appeal has been taken and the
defence believe that the judgment will be re-
versed in the Supreme court.
THE ELECTIONS.
Ilettirns In and thsj Grand Opening of
lleucrmann & lsro.
It Is safe to tay that the result of last Tues-
day's elections brought with It very few sur
prises. It did not require the keen gift of
prophecy to foretell matters as they have since
transpired. Dut leaving all politics aside on
that same election day our city witnessed the
opening of a business that promises to bring
forth fruits worthy of the gentlemen embarking
in It. The Messrs. Ileuermann & Bro. have

Colonel Walthall and Mr. II. P. Drought ap-
peared for the plaintiff and the defendant
was represented by G. T. Brantley. After
hearing the plaintiff's evidence the court ad-
journed until 2 o'clock when the testimony
on the defendant's side was adduced. The
case Is still proceeding.

Honest Emma and the Editor.
The editor of a miniog camp newspaper at
tended one of the Abbott concerts lately and
In a lengthy review of the opera says :
As a singer Kmma Abbott cast just wallop
the hJse off any that ever wagged
a jaw on the boards. From her clear bird
like upper notes she would canter way down
to the bass racket and then cushion back to
a sort of spiritual treble which made every
man In the audience Imagine every hair In his
head was a golden string of a celestial harp
over which angelic fingers were sweeping in
the inspiring old tune of "Same Put the Kct
tie On." Here she would rest a while trill
ing like an enchanted bird and then hop in
among the upper notes with a git up and git
vivacity that Uncled the class pendants on
the chandaliers and elicited a whoop
of pleasure from every galloot in
the mob. In the last act she
made a neat nlar and worked in that
famous kiss of hers on Daslle. He had her
in his arms with her head J vine on hi
shoulder and her eyes darting streaks of gal-
vanized love Into his. All at once her lips
began to twitch coaxlngly and get into posi-
tion and when he tumbled to her racket he
drew her up easy like shuts his eyes and
then her ripe luscious lips glewed themselves
to his and a thrill of pleasure nabbed hold of
him until the audience could almost hear his
toenails grind against his boots. Then she
shuts her eyes and pushes harder and oh
holy Moses 1 the smack that followed started
the stitching in every masculine heart in the
house. She is a thoroughbred right from the
start and the fellow who takes In her kisses
is more to be envied than the haurht est mon
arch that ever squatted down on a gold-plated
AMUSEMENT COLUMN.

Is Murder a Crime?
From tho Ioulsvllle Courier Journal.
If raurJer Is a crime it is a crime which
under our laws can not except in extraordi-
nary cases be punished. We still keep the
fiction on the statute books. We still pretend
that murder is punishable that one man must
hang for slaying another; but as a matter of
fact no crime can be commuted with more
impunity.
