Pittsburg Dispatch (Hep.) : What docs

thickly in the East t
Iloston Herald (Ind.) : One by one the
old Stalwarts have dropped away from the
President. There is this consolation for Mr
Arthur the farther he gets from the old
crowd the nearer he will be to the people.
Galveston Print (Independent): Wonder if
it affords the New York Philadelphia and
Chicago papers any satisfaction to throw mud
at Tom Ochiltree ? They go at it as if they
were pam lor it.
Philadelphia Telegraph: Unquestionably
the current of revolution is deep and strong in
Ohio and it will require extraordinary skill
and energy on the part of the Republican
managers to recover the State either this year
or next.
St. Louis Globe-Democrat (Rep.): Al-
though very little has been said of late about
civil service reform it is evident that the Ad'
ministration Intends to carrv out the nrovis
ions of the Pendleton bill in cood faith and
to give the experiment a thoroughly fair
trial.
Washington Post (Dem.) : The present
situation in its relations to the campaign of
next year is all that the most sagacious Dem
ocratic politician could wish. The intense
desire of Republicans to have the Democrats
Uckle the tariff is the most natural thing in
the world as natural as the desired action
would be foolish in view of certain failure
Galveston News: In dealing with the
school tax question the Legislature has fully
redeemed for the Texas Democracy the pledge
of the Galveston convention to provide by
constitutional amendment for a separate and
permanent revenue from taxation for an ef
ficient system of public free schools. And it
has shown equal solicitude (or the geneial
cause of education in voting to set apart
2000000 acres of land out of the public debt
reservation nan lor tne state university and
nan ior tne iree scnoois.
Of the advantages of the proposed Florida
canal the New Orleans Times-Democrat nays:
It will shorten the distance to New York
London Liverpool and all other North At-
lantic ports Si 4 miles for steamers and
slichtlv more for sailinc vessels the time be
Ing from three to eight days shorter than at
presrnt. The reduction in insurance alone
will be $4000000 a year. This with the
time saved the freight saved and the dangers
of the voyace reduced represents the annual
value oi tnts canal ana the income it will en
joy when constructed.
New York Sun (Independent): In view of
the grave events now transpiring in Great
Britain the people of this country will watch
closely the proceedings of the approaching
congress of Irish-Americans at Philadelphia
Will that assembly heed Parnell's fierce tic-
nnnciation of the evils done to Ireland by the
apostles of murder and destruction ? Or will
the action of the congiess be controlled by
two incendiary newspapers which would
gladly ruin Parnell and Davitt because they
cannot control them and by half a dozen ref-
ugees who care not to what peril thev expose
their countrymen at home and who know
nothing about American public sentiment ?

I .lily Gould's Schemes.
The New Yok Sun says that Jay Gould's
recent trip South was not a mere pleasure trip
as reported. It was the initial step of a great
scheme the connection of his Southwestern
system with the Southern ports of the At'
lnntic. The building of his yacht seems
have developed nautical dispositions in him
lie wants to take Hold ot JNew Orleans
Brunswick Savannah and Norfolk as sea'
board outlets for his Southwestern system

I known as the Memphis and Little Rock rail-
road which is a part of the Iron Mountain
and consequently of the Missouri Pacific sys-
tem. The Virginia Tennessee and Georgia
line is controlled by the George I Seney syn-
dicate and a combination between it and'
I Jay Gould is to be the great card in the de-
velopment of the South. There is plenty of
work yet to be done in order to complete the
development of the scheme and there are
. several short connecting roads to be built. In
. these details he does not intend to take any
I active interest leaving the construction part
I of the scheme In thejiands of the Seney syn-
dicate which proved so successful in building
t'ie Nickel-Plated road and saddling it upon
Vandetbilt. By the time he returns from his

and he will set fresh and reinvigoratedto the
working out of his new Southern scheme.
With the constantly increasing competition of
the great roads terminating in Boston Phila-
delphia and Dallimore with the development
of the Mississippi freight traffic and wlln this
new scheme of a great Southwestern highway
to the ocean the outlook ol the old trunk
lines like the New York Central and the Erie
does not appear to be very encouraging.
