spoken at prior ceremonies are
Dr. Arnold |. Rudolph, renowned
neonatologist. Dr. Milton Nirken,
well-known pediatrician and dis-
tinguished attorney Linda Addison.
Dr. Rudolph is an immigrant from
South Africa who became an
American citizen some 25 years
ago. Dr. Nirken and Addison are
fitting, he has asked Jewish
notables to address and welcome
these individuals and families
who take the oath of allegiance
and become Americans. Such
was the event recently when Dr.
A. Aaron Mintz, the proud son of
immigrants, addressed hundreds
of immigrants who were soon-
to-be citizens.
Judge Hittner’s son, Life Scout
George Hittner, a cadet at Went-
worth Military Academy in Lex-
ington, Missouri, led the immi-
grants in reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance to the Flag.

chose to be Americans.
Dr. Mintz is a first generation
American, an American by birth.
His family before him were immi-'
grants,just like the people
gathered there. Highlights
of his warm inspiring address
follow:
"To the guests and all of you
who are here, this is the most
exciting ceremony of your life -
that of becoming a citizen of the
United States of America."
In 1904 three Mintz brothers
had immigrated from Russia to
freedom in the United States of
America. Dr. Mintz remembered
that his "mother had also come ‘
from Russia at the turn of the
century. She arrived in this coun-
try at the age of 15 to be the
home-mother' for her father who
immigrated the year before. Over

Houston begins the task of mapping over 500,000 parcels of land
into zoning districts for the proposed zoning ordinance. We need
your help to tell us how you think your property should be zoned.
It’s like piecing a giant puzzle together so it works for all of us. We’re
holding workshops all over town so you can participate. Please join us.

York. The family opened a cloth-
ing manufacturing business. In
time each of. the brothers and
sisters married and had many
children.
"The work ethic became a way
of life, with everyone working
and the families prospered. Citi-
zenship was sacred for all of
them, and within a few years my
grandparents, aunts and uncles
all obtained their citizenships -
as did my mother.
"But, back to the Mintz brothers:
My father was the youngest. He
and his brothers had run away
from oppression, hunger and
abuse. All that was common in
Russia at the beginning of this
century. None of the brothers
had the opportunity to have been
educated in Russia. Although
they spoke no English, they had
the desire to leave for a better
life in America. They arrived at
Ellis Island in New York by boat.
Today, their names, along with
the names of my mother's family,
appear among the archives that
are on display in the restored Ellis
Island Museum.
"The brothers had heard that
“in New York the streets were lined
with gold, that it was the land of
milk and honey. That was not the
case. There was freedom, ves,
but gold - no.
"The brothers migrated to
Merryville, Louisiana. Why Merry- .
ville? In Russia they had been
trained to work in brick manu-
facturing. Merryville had the red
clay that is used in making bricks.
4. So, they were directed to the
Louisiana town by the Ellis Island
officials.
"Their stay in Merryville was
very brief, due to their lack of
ability to compete with others in
the established brick factories in
