“Babes in the Wood."
Rice’s Evangeline Company had an enthu-
siaslic reception last night at the Arch and
played “Babes in the Wood” with great fer-
vor. The musical portions were peculiarly
well rendered and the great school-room scene
between Tommy and Sally provoked shouts
of laughter. It is an entertainment none
should miss.—[Philadelphia Times.

Illegal Voting.
We hope the salutatory lesson taught cer-
tain illegal voters by the United States court
at its last session will not be thrown away up-
on our city. There are a number of illegal
voters among our Mexican population polled
at every election in our city and it would be
well for these people who are really ignorant
of their status to be informed that to cast an
illegal vote is a greater crime than to steal a
horse.

Opening New Streets and Widening Old
Oues.
Upon the reorganization of the city council
after the election of six new aiderman among
the subjects of interest io the city that should
engage their attention is the opening of new
streets and widening of old ones. This mat-
ter has been neglected too long already. Al-
though the city has the authority under the
charter to act in this matter at any time how-
ever valuable the land or how elegant the
houses bordering upon the proposed street
may be yet the council will hesitate to act
when met by a heavy local opposition. For
instance an important thoroughfare Dwver
avenue which might have been opened a few
years ago at a very little cost and possibly
with no opposition is now closed by the ad-
ditional pur hase made by the United States
government for the arsenal of the Beauregard
strip of land extending from Flores street to
the river.
The second ward is particularly deficient
in the necessary thoroughfares for the accom-
modation of the public to the great damage of
the property owners themselves. There is not
a street in that ward north of Houst in street
connecting in a direct way the east side of the
river with the San Pedro andMhe territory west
of that creek. Why is it that the aidermen of
that ward have not acted in this matter or
rather why have the residents—property own-
ers of the ward—been so long neglectful of
their interests ? Are they waiting for the city
to force them legally to do what a proper re-
gard for their own interests would prompt
them to do willingly? Like some land own-
ers when a railroad right-of-way agent calls
upon them to donate the right-of-way for the
proposed railroad they demand full price for
the land taken being desirous of availing
themselves of the benefits of the enhanced
value of the property by the building of the
road and pocketing the paltry sum as a pilon
—saying that the road is bound to come any-
how.
We hope the city council will act promptly
in this matter as the proportion of the cost to
be piid by the city will ne very little provid-
ed the committee appointed by the council act
according to the charter. X.

Rice’s “Evangeline”
Is one of the remarkable sources of comic
musical entertainment which has ever met
with a rival on the American stage. It has a
vital managnment and a corps of beautiful
female artists of immaculate proportions and
graceful actions that cannot be approached
either as mercurial commedians or accomplish-
ed artists. Nellie Larkelle is the inimitable
G. briel of the troupe and has an Evang -line
that has no rival as a captivating artist and a

beauties have not been seen <4l this stage for
a long time.—[NcW York Tribune.
