Picture of Three Face*.
[T. H. H.]
Three splendid faces—three exquisite faces
Each one in turn than the others more fair
The three must be sisters —they may be the
Graces
But neither with either can gazers compare;
Each at we gaze grows more bright than the
others
Each one less human and each more divine
I reck not I care not which may be another’s
If either one any one can but be mine.
.1: *. I*l .7 ‘ : ■ ■
Three gentle maidens as whom were not seen
Any so beauteous in all everywhere:
Such three pairs of eyes such three sweet girls
between
Three heads so deliciously floated in hair;
What studies of rapture! I ask not to know
The scope or intent of the artist’s design
Or what full length maidens he has to bestow
If either one any one may but be mine.
What poet or sculptor could ever have fitted
These exquisite laces with forms wrought to
shape
And curvefl each to lines from a splendor
transmitted
From the heavenHest heavens ? Ah.’ sun-
beams should drape
The glory of such for 'twere Nature’s sole art;
And what artist other were half so divine ?
O I were content for my own selfish part
If either one any one could but be mine.
Paddy’s Complaint.
Oh Molly you vixen I ’tis sadly you’re mixin’
My head and my heart in this curious way;
Myfiedrt you are burning my head you are
turning
And dhriving my senses completely away.
I’ll never believe that you’ll ever deceive
No not jf the parish clerk swore by the book;
For mayn’t I see Jhat you’re still true to me
By the love light that gleams in your slyly
shy look?
I candidly think if you only bat wink •
You can send my mind spinning around like
a top;
And shure when yon sigh if you look in my
eye.
You will find a whole ocean just ready to
dhrop.
Now ’th I’m wishing that you would go fishing
And let me get caught on your dear little
h**k;
And I’ll be a fish or an eel if you wish
And the divil may eat me if you’ll be the
cook. _ ।

THE OVERCOAT HE GOT. .
How They Do Thing* In Detroit a* Well
M In Some Other Places.
From the Detroit Free Press. •
Yesterday morning a tail young man
of twenty landed at the Union depot
with a bundle under his arm and after
Aree or four minutes spent in getting
his bearings he walked up Jefferson
avenue and turned into a clothing
store.
“Do you wish to try on some coats
and vests for a dollar?” asked the
proprietor as he rushed from behind
the counter.
“No I guess not. Do you deal on
the square ?”
“My frent dot is exactly vhat I does.
I vas so square dot I lose s3*ooo last
year. Can I sell you an overcoat for
ten dollar?”
“No I guess not. Here is an over-
coat that I bought of you four weeks
ago.”
“Bought of me ?”
“Yes I think you are the man. When
I got it home we found that it was
moth-eaten. I can pick it to pieces in
a dozen places.”
“Is dot possible ! Unt how much
you pay ?” -ZZ
■ “Eight dollars.”
“My shtars! And vhat you vant
now ?”
“I want my money back.”
“Vhell —vhell. My frent I am sorry
for you. You seem like an honest poy
and it vhas too bad!”
“Yes it was a swindle and I want
my money back.”
“Dear me but I vish you vhas here
yesterday. Let me explain to you.
You bought doj coat four weeks ago!”
“Yes four weeks to-day.”
“Vhell I had sold oudt to my cou-
sin Philip shust one day before. PhiQ
ip ish not a square man.”
“What have I got to do with
Philip ?*
“Let me explain. In dree days
Philip makes assignment to my brud-
der Louis. Dot Louis is a leedle off.
He would sheat your eye teeth away
from you.”
“Yes but I haven’t anything to do
with Louis.” »
“Let me explain. Ix>uls kept der
place about a week und he gif a shat-
tel mortgage to my fadder-in-law and
vhas bounced out.”
“I don’t know anything about that.”
“Let me explain. My fadder-law
was took mit a fit and died and he
leaf dis blace to my wife. My wife
was gone to Europe for two years and
she leaf me as agent. Now you see
how it was. I gannot tell you who
sold dot coat. May be it was Philip
may be Louis may be my fadder-law.
I couldn’t haf been me tor I vhas in
Shicago. If you leaf me dot coat I
will write to my wife. She is square
shust like me and may be writes back
dot you can take a linen duster and
two white vests and call it all right.”
“Say this is a sneaking swindle”
exclaimed the young man.
“May be it vhas. Philip was a great
liar.”
“I’ll go to the police!”
“Vhell dot is all right; may be der
police vhill help me catch Louis. I
shust foun oudt last night dot he cut
all der hind buttons off all der coats in
der store before he left.”
“If you’ll step out doors I’ll mash
you!”
“Vhell I like to oblige you but you
see I vhas only agent for my wife.” •
“Well you’ll hear from me again
and don’t you forget it I” said the vic-
tim as he went out.
“I hope so—l hope so. I like to
make it right I vhas only agent for
my wife but I feel so square dot I
take dot coat back for $3 if you whant
to trade it out in paper collars.”
Artliar** New Bargain with John Kelly.
New York letter in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Talking to an Arthur man once a Blaine
man but too poor to stand out he said to me
Christmas day and I jot it down because he
is sagacious and lucky: “Arthur is going to
make a strong administration and be renomi-
nated. He has passed all his shyness feels
confident in the office and has already secured
the state of New York for good by resuming
the alliance with John Kelly which Conkling
broke up at Bennett’s demand.” “How do
you know that t" said I. “I do not know it
but I see the Kelly managers of districts and
the Arthur managers cordial together again
and the tammany men in the legislature are
going to divide the organization with the re-
publicans. So you see New Yosk state be-
ing necessary to elect a republican president
will be cock-sure to go for Arthur in 1884
with tammany remaining stump. It looks
queer but it is politics.”
The Chinese have established a great arsenal
at Kao Chang Miao six miles from Shanghai
where 1300 natives are at cork making arms
and ammunition. The rifles are said to bear
comparison with the best English and Ameri-
can make. Nearly a dozen steam frigates
each carrying 26 guns and provided with 400
hoi • • -power engines have been built and
launshed from the works.
