Rep. Chuck Hopson speaks in Cherokee County
An overview of activities of
the recent Texas legislative ses-
sion was presented when State
Rep. ChuckHopson visited with
Cherokee County residents
Tuesday at Wells, Alto, Rusk
and Jacksonville.
"There are no new taxes,"
the state representative said.
"However, when you go to
purchase your hunting and
fishing license, you will see an
increase. Speeding and chink-
ing tickets have also increased,''
he added.
"This session was a histori-
cal session in that the gover-
nor, heutenant governor and
speaker of the house were
all Republican, as well as the
majorityinbothhouses. We had
to all work together; he said.
Rep. Hopson said it was not
all bad news because counties
will be able to pick up extra
money after the legislature
extended the time a prisoner
can be housed in a county jad
before being transferred to
TDCJ. Dogwood Trail Task
Force serving Cherokee and
Anderson counties received
its grant funchng, he said.
The Robin Hood tax bill will
berewritten. Rep. Hopson said.
"We have two years to sunset
it or it goes back into effect.
The senate has a plan that, will
reduce taxes to 75 cents and
start taxing services and raise
the sales tax. We will probably
see new taxe s like $ 1 per p ack of
cigarettes and video machines
at race tracks, An income tax
for education is the only thing
we have yet to look at."
Substance abuse offenders
wdl be put in one prison and
there is a plan to try to reduce
their time. It costs the state $40
per day per prisoner, he said.
In reference to closing a
state hospital and state school.
Rep. Hopson said. Rusk State
Hospital has had outstanding
accreditations. The last accredi-
tation visit Rusk State Hospital
received a perfect score. The
hospital and the buddings are
old. It is Worth approximately
$11 million while the Austin
State Hospital is worth $65
million. If Rusk was closed
the state could not recoup as
much money from its property
as others facilities such as the
Austin hospital.
"We need to make sure rev-
enue at Texas State Radroad
goes up," he said.
"We will now be able to
regulate insurance and make
it cheaper to do business in
Texas," he said.
He related that the legisla-
ture gave the governor money
for an enterprise fund to try to
pick up jobsfor Texas, "We want
to make the job climate good."
A total of $70 million has
gone into the community
college fund. The legislature
authorized universities to
float their tuition. "I hope this
doesn't force people not to go to
the flagship schools. But, this
wdl make other schools more
attractive to kids.
"Alot of votes have been hard
and I have stayed up all night
making decisions. I try to do
what I think is best for the
people of Cherokee County, I
know it is a thankless job, but
I appreciate the opportunity
of serving you in the Texas
House."

First Assembly of God, Rusk
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty!
The law kills. It isthedemands ofthe Lawwithout
the Spirit that brings us into condemnation. We
can not save, deliver, liberate ourselves. Itmustbe
given by the Holy Spirit to the believer. This is the
reason why unbelief will hi nderllberating power In
our lives A judgemental attitude will only bind us
and not liberate us. I n spiritual liberty, whatever is
binding us is broken through thoroughly severed
from what gives us bondage. Genuine liberty
begins at the believer's conversion. Whatever
is preventing our freedom i s to be broken severed
to receive opportunity to enjoy our sought liberty.
Liberty ismaintained by the continual indwelling of
the spirit through obedience to divine directions.
Freedom is not a license to do what we want,
rather freedom to do what we should do. One is
not In liberty until what is bindinghim or hinders
him is thoroughly broken, severed through The
experiencing of freedom given by the Holy Spirit
transforms ordinary lives Into righteous people.
The nearness experience with God the believer
becomes the more he Is actually depending and
trusting in Gods grace. When we let God have
his way, prayers are answered, healings occur,
miracles and move of the Holy Spirit are actually
acheived. WhatadifferenceoccurswhenGodhas
freedom in his church. We are only beginning to
experience the freedom available through faith.
