Super Seniors

Special to the Cherokeean/Herald
The Super Seniors of Hilltop
Baptist Church met April 6 in the
Chapel in the Gym for fellowship,
program and a covered dish lun-
cheon.
During the fellowship hour, the
group enjoyed punch, coffee and
homemade candy. The long white
covered tables were decorated with
beautiful Easter lilies furnished
by Billie and Catherine Cates hon-
oring the different deceased mem-
bers of the Cates family. After the
meeting Mrs. Cates gave the plants
to friends.

Leonard Blanton who lived in the
Redlawn community many years
ago. Carrol led the group songs
and Harold accompanied at the
piano these songs: "I'll Meet You
In the Morning," "I Will Sing the
Wonderous Story," "The Evening
Sun," "Will There Be Any Stars?,
"I'll Fly Away" and "Victory in
Jesus."
Harold sang a solo "Hallelujah
Square" and gave a spiritual talk
on Proverbs Chapter 11.
Blackie McCullough told some
"Tall Tales" and he gave the prayer
before the covered dish luncheon.
Pasture Clinic slated April 27
By Jack White
Cherokee County Agent
The drought of last year caused
extensive damage to most of the
pastures and hay meadows across
East Texas. Many producers are
reporting losses of 50% or more of
their grass stands. With so many
problems, the question arises as to
whether it would be better to just
start over or try to repair what
little grass is left.
This can be a very costly and
time consuming process depend-
ing upon which option is chosen. A
"Pasture Clinic" has been sched-
uled for Tuesday, April 27, to help
producers make the best choice.
The program will be held at the
Showbarn in Jacksonville, begin-
ning at 7:00 p.m. There is no
charge for the program.
Private pesticide license holders
may be especially interested in
attending the Clinic. Two hours of
CEU (Continuing Education
Credit) will be provided for the
meeting.
Topics for the program will in-
clude: Inventory of current plants
(weeds and all), new varieties of
grasses and their potential, reno-
vation techniques that work, and
particular discussion of techniques
such as soil aeration, subsoiling
and disking.
The amount of grass in a field or
meadow will determine the future
of the farm. It will affect stocking
rates, gains, reproduction, and
costs of production. Noothersingle
factor has as great an impact on
the profitability of the ranch.
This is a program producers will
not want to miss. For more infor-
mation, contact County Extension
Agent, Jack White at (903) 683-
5416.
This Clinic is being sponsored by
the Beef and Forage Committee of
Cherokee County.
