Rusk 1st Baptist Children's Choirs present musical

First Baptist Church Children's
Choir will present the spring mu-
sical "Truth Works" at 6 p.m. Sun-
day.
The musical is based on the Josh
McDowell Resources for Children
and written by Dennis and Nan
Allen.
Practice for this musical began
in January which included musi-
cal instruction as well as lessons
in making right choices according
to God's Word.
Opening for the musical event
will be the "Spring Sing" performed
by the 4-5 year-old Joyful Noise
Makers under the direction of Sue
Gilchrest.
Members of this choir include
Bradley Adams, Elizabeth
Cavazoz, Lanie Cockrum, Laura
Dudley, Amanda Gilchrest, Kelsey
Green, Colton Kadlecek, Billie
Jean Langston, Adam Lawson,
Jimmy Stingley, Trey Tosh and
Sydney Womack. Teachers include
Brian and Carla Lawson, Janet
Cavazoz, Lisa Cockrum and Valli
Stingley.
The combined choirs include the
Music Makers for first and second
graders, under the direction of
Joan Robbins and Missi Basse;
Kid's praise for third through fifth
graders, under the direction of
Terri Daniel, will then present
"Truth Works."

I Boxcars, BBQ & The
Bridge slated in Rusk
Special tour packages are available
for a steam train excursion, dinner
and a play.
This is an opportunity for visitors to
enjoy a relaxing day of East Texas
hospitality with a 50-mile round trip
steam train excursion, world famous
Texas barbecue and a presentation of
the Cherokee Civic Theatre production
of 'The Bridge," a lighthearted play
based on the history and characters of
Cherokee County.
Each Friday, Saturday and Sunday
in June, citizens of Rusk are invited to
come and hear Texas tales and ride
the rails. For information and

Rusk youngster has poster
displayed in state capítol
A poster entered by Tim Hicks of
Rusk Elementary School, was
among the top 250 entries in the
Texas Tomorrow Fund Scholar-
ship contest.
The poster was on public display
in the North Central Gallery of the
Capitol Extension in Austin.
A letter to the youngster from
Carole Keeton Rylander, Comp-
troller of Public Accounts, said the
response to the Texas Tomorrow
Fund poster contest was over-
whelming. More than 14,000 en-
tries were received.

Texas Tomorrow Fund by either
calling the comptroller's hotline at
1-800-445-GRAD (4723) or on the
Internet at http://

The top eight winning poster draw-
ings will be shown on that site.
Rusk Garden Cmjb
The Rusk Garden Club held its
March meeting at the First Bap-
tist Church with Will Cumbee as
speaker. Mr. Cumbee spoke on
butterfly gardens and showed a
film on the subject.
Arbor Day has been set for April
24 to plant a tree on the Rusk
State Hospital grounds in memory
of Mauerite Hassell, Louola Hoover
and Frankie Hugghins.
Refreshments were served to
Tommie Nielsen, Lael Anderson,
Maxine Pierce, Opal Fitts," Myra
Winder, Thelma Clute, Opal
Hendricks, Becky Rosser, Edith
Kinsel, Norma J. Bairfield and
Melva Hermes, a visitor.
Members made a pilgrimage to
Henderson for lunch at the Main
Street Gallary. A meal was en-
joyed followed by a visit to Jordan
Plant Farm and Davis Plant Farm.
Attending were Mrs. Bairfield,
Helen Miskel, Mrs. Kinsel, Mrs.
Winder, Mrs. Fitts, Thelma Clute
and Mrs. Hermes.

Learning Center in Alto is planned for
May 1. Also, registration for Kids for
Christ summer program is planned
for the same day, May 1.

H Memorial service
slated at Oakland
A Memorial Day service is planned
for April 25 at the Oakland Missionary
Baptist Church. Services begin with
Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. and
worship at 10:30 a.m. Speaker will be
the Rev. R.S. Dyess.
Lunch will be served in the fellowship
hall following worship sen/ices. Singing
will begin at 1:30 p.m.
A special offering will be taken for
the cemetery fund for the upkeep of
the cemetery during the service.

chosen as KC
cheerleader
On April 18 Jana Carol Cleveland
competed with 38 candidates from
across the U.S. for a position as a
Kilgore College Ranger cheerleader.
She was selected by a panel of
NCA judges from Dallas and Houston.
■ Central High
Homecoming slated
The 36th annual Central High
Homecoming is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Sunday, May 2, at the old Central High
School. All students, teachers and
people who have lived or are living in
the community are invited to attend.
Everyone is invited to come and
bring a covered dish and enjoy the
food and fellowship.
There will be a drawing for a quilt
that was quilted by the members of the
Central High FCE Club. Tickets are $1
each and can be purchased at the
homecoming or by calling Oliver and
Margaret Griffith at 409/858-4252.
