Area Deaths
Irvin Conley
Funeral for Irvin C. Conley of Rusk
was at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Benson
Memorial CME Church in Jackson-
ville with the Rev. Robert Christo-
pher officiating.
Burial was in the Mount Moriah
Cemetery, Rusk, under the direc-
tion of Mercy Funeral Home.
Mr. Conley died Tuesday morning
at his home. He was born in Rusk
and was a graduate of Texas College
and TVl®r Barber College. He served
in the U.S. Army and taught at the
Bradford School in Rusk. He was a
member of the Texas College Board
of Education, St. John's Masonic
Lodge No. 529, the Cherokee Broth-
erhood Club and was president of
the local NAACP. Mr. Conley also
worked with the Cherokee County
Historical Commission in establish-
ing a historical marker for the Rusk
Colored School.
He was a member of the Mount
Pleasant CME Church and donated
the. land where the building is lo-
cated. He was a member of the ¿hurch
board of trustees, the steward board,
choir and was president of Federa-
tion No. 2.
Survivors are his wife, Inez Conley
of Rusk; a cousin, Mrs. Cecil Frazier;
a brother-in-law, Ezel Dickerson; two
nephews, Donald Dickerson of Rusk
and George Reeder of Tyler and
other relatives.
Pallbearers were Eddie Harris,
Willie Bradley, Anthony Easley,
Walter Session, Willie Watson and
Jimmy Singletaiy.
Honorary pallbearers were mem-
bers of the St. John's Masonic Lodge
No. 529.
Riley Tidwell
Funeral for Riley M. Tidwell, 71,
of Gallatin was at 1:30 p.m. Thurs-
day in Thompson Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Robin Parsons
officiating. Burial was in Henry Cem-
etery with full military honors.
Mr. Tidwell died Monday in a Vet-
erans Hospital at Marlin after an
extended illness. He was born Sept.
3,1923, in Fairfield ahd had lived at
Gallatin since 1979. He was a'World
War II veteran, having served with
the 36th Infantry Division from
Mexia. He was the subject of a
Pulitzer Prize winning column by
the famous war correspondent Ernie
Pyle and was the original G I Joe,
played by Robert Mitchell, in the
movie by that name.
Mr. Tidwell was a retired truck
driver for Union Carbide-Linde Di-
vision in Deer Park with 26 years of
service. He was a Baptist and a mem-
ber of the American legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars in Jack-
sonville.
Survivors are his wife, Imogene
Tidwell of Gallatin; two sons, David
Tidwell of Katy and Mark Tidwell of
New Ulm; three daughters, Bennie
Joyce Reed, Carolyn Mitschke and
Pat Holeman, all of Houston; four
brothers, Delmar Tidwell and Jack
Tidwell, both of Brenham, George
Tidwell of Louisville, Ky. and Leslie
Tidwell of Dallas; two sisters, Esther
Lee Grable of Kentucky and Melva
Jane Dupree of New Mexico; 18
grandchildren; three great-grand-
children; and several nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were members of the
Honor Guard.
Honorary pallbearers were Lem
Derrington, George Amundson, Don
Davis, Otis Echols, Johnny Grimes
and J. R. Cole.

Rev. Lewis Nichols
The Rev. Lewis Wood row Nichols,
former pastor of the Rusk First
United Methodist Church, died June
4. He is survived by his wife of many
years, Phyllis Ruth Andrews Nichols.
He was accepted on a trial basis
into the Texas Conference in 1953.
Rev. Nichols attended Lon Morris
College, received a Bachelor of Fine
Arts Degree from the University of
Texas in 1941 and a Bachelor of
Divinity degree from Southern Meth-
odist Perkins School of Theology in
Dallas in 1955.
He served various churches in the
Texas Conference, including the
Rusk church in the late 1940s.
Other survivors include his chil-
dren, George M. Nichols, Mary Ann
Milner, Guy Lewis Nichols and Mark
Andrew Nichols; brother, Talley
Nichols of Jacksonville; sisters,
Gwen Yocom and JoAnn Harrison
and six grandchildren.
Geraldine Conway
Funeral for Geraldine Stokes
Conway, 84, of Rusk was at 10:30
a.m. Monday in the O. T. Allen &
Son Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Robert King officiating. Burial
was in Mount Hope Cemetery at
Wells.
Mrs. Conway died Friday night in
East Texas Medical Center Rusk.
She was born Dec. 3,1910, in Wells.
She graduated from Jacksonville
College and received her bachelor's
degree from Sul Robs in Alpine. She
was a retired school toucher, having
taught school at Maydelle and Di-
alville and also in the Gulf Breeze
School District in Florida. She was a
member of the Gulf Breeze Baptist
Church in Florida and a Delta Kappa
Gamma in Pensicola, Fla. and the
Order of the Eastern Star in Rusk.
Survivors include two brothers,
Zack B. Stokes and Norris Stokes,
both of Alto; four sisters, Mrs. Mar-
guerite Glass of Wylie, Mrs. Mildred
Holcomb of Rusk, Mrs. Mollie Wal-
lace ofTyler and Mrs. Mattie Felders
of Liberty; a brother-in-law and two
sisters-in-law, Hugh and Edna
Conway of Las Cruses, N.M. and
Mozell Conway of Sulphur Springs;
and numerous nieces, nephews,
great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pallbearers were Charles Ray
Flowers, Leonard Latham, Elmer
Havard, Floyd Latham, Ray Hoover
and O.A. Broach.
If desired memorials may be made
to a charity of choice.
Joe Holloway
Funeral for Joe Holloway, 87, of
Rusk, was at 1:30 p.m. Monday at
the Mount Pleasant CME Church in
Rusk with the Rev. Billy Burnett
and the Rev. Louise Burnett officiat-
ing. Burial was in the Rusk Memo-
rial Cemetery under the direction of
Williams Funeral Home.
Mr. Hollowaydied Friday inaiyier
hospital. He was born Jan. 29,1908,
in Fulton, Ark. He served in the U.S.
Army Air Corps during World War
II.
Survivors are one sister and
brother-in-law, Annis and the Rev.
W. M. Johnson ofTyler; three grand-
sons; and several nieces, nephews
and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Marcus Taylor,
Charlie L. .Nelson, Eddie Dearman,
Clarence L. Shears and Genie
Overstreet.
Honorary pallbearers were Willie
L. Johnson, James Johnson, Hardy
L. Navors, JoeN. Teague, Doyl Skin-
ner and T. H. Neeley.
Allen Duane Brown
Funeral for Allen Duane Brown,
34, of Rusk was at 2 p.m. Thursday
in the Salem Missionary Baptist
Church with the Rev. Tommy Mabry
and Chaplain Bill Brewer officiat-
ing. Burial was in Gann Cemetery in
Lufkin under the direction of Wal-
lace-Thompson Funeral Home.
Mr. Brown died Monday at his
home-after an extended illness. He
was born Dec. 14, 1960, in Dallas.
He was a member of the Salem Mis-
sionary Baptist Church and a youth
leader of the church. He was em-
ployed by the TDCJ Gurney Unit
and had been a Rusk resident for 13
years.
He was preceded in death by his
father, Allen Wayne Brown of Rusk.
Survivors are his wife, Vicki Brown
of Rusk; one daughtor, Kimberly
Brown and a son, Brandon Watson,
both of Rusk; his mother, Ann Brown
of Rusk; a sister and brother-in-law,
Lisa and David Westbrook of Rusk;
two brothers, John Brown and Clyde
Brown, both ofiyier; mother-in-law
and father-in-law, Jane and Eddie
Goolsby of Longview; a brother-in-
law, Michael Goolsby of Longview;
two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-
law, Susan and Bill Gray of Long-
view and Kim and Mike Gibbons of
Houston; several nieces and neph-
ews and many close friends.
Pallbearers were Tommy
Blackwell, Mike Clark, Michael
Goolsby, Bill Gray, Paul Marx and
David Waites.
Honorary pallbearers were the
men and youth group of the Salem
Missionary Baptist Church.
