Peggy: The only thing looked forward to more
than the annual tournament was the school
closing program. Near the close of schools
two classes would put on a program about every
other night: the first and second, etc. It
was a time for getting new outfits and letting
your hair done in Shirley Temple curls. The
programs consisted mostly of little speeches
poems, plays, or dances. Everyone liked it
because everyone in the class got a chance to
do something. The high _rades usual ly had a
play and a square dance except the Juniors
and seniors, who simply had a play. If there
is one thing lacking in the integrated system,
it is surely the school closing program.
There were other times for getting dressed
ups though. There was high school talent
night where each of the high school classses
would do an act. They were judged and placed
first and second.
There were very few pageants . Most of the
time candidates raised money to win their
title. The only exception was Miss NHA (Nat-
ional Homemaker of America before integration
changed it to FHA.) She was elected by judges
in a pageant. She modeled sportwear and even-
ing wears waltzed with her excort, answered a
question and was selected.
There was also the Senior Day Program. The
Juniors received their class rings in a cere-
mony. The seniors willed their abilities and
disabilities to members of the Junior class.
If someone wanted to bequeath to you their
ability to cooks when they read their will
you'd go on stage and this person would give
you a bowl or a large spoon-anything symbolic
of cooking.

torium built, we used to put on programs at
