structi ve.”
Proeschel took his case to the I
: superintendent, PTA and Parks I
6 and Recreation Board in a cam-
paign to improve the
; playground.
“I had an interest in local
‘ government anyway,” he said,
’ ‘4 but that incident was certainly
: the catalyst.”
Receiving a position on the
; Parks and Recreation Board the
> same month helped him to get
a the ball rolling in an effort to
• build a new improved
playground at Rountree.
When he had significantly im-
pressed upon Superintendent
John Horn and Rountree Prin-
cipal James Marion the fact
that there was a playground
problem, their interest helped
him begin his efforts.
“As the school year progress-
ed, Mr. Marion and I grew into
a mutual respect,” he said.
“We worked together a lot to
improve the playground.”
As well, Dr. Horn promised to
match financially as much
money as Proeschel could raise
himself for the improvement.
So, eager to make Horn hurt
financially, he began contacting
developers to help with the pro-
ject.
Developers such as Sandy
Homes donated and installed
park benches and other com-
panies contributed pea gravel.
• Parks and Recreation Director
; Mark Thorton graded the
> playground area.
By that time, Dr. Horn was
O obligated to match the fun-
’ draising with $5000 from the
• school which he did. And in a
; busy three weekends in May,
’ Proeschel and friends put the
J finishing touches on the
I playground.
“The best thank-you I got
; from the project was from Mrs.
; Carole Pierson’s second grade
Q class,” he said. “Each kid sent a
" letter and a drawing of the new
; playground. That meant a lot to
J me.”
Proeschel routinely suggests
; that the project had been par-
: ticularly challenging because he
