United Nations drops U.S. resolution
CITY &
AMPUS
Thursday - June 24, 2004 - page 3
(AP) Facing strong opposition, the
United States announced Wednesday it
was dropping a resolution seeking a new
exemption for American peacekeepers
from international prosecution for war
crimes,
U.S. deputy ambassador James Cun-
ningham made the announcement after
a U.S. compromise that would limit the
exemption to one final year failed to get
support from key Security Council op-
ponents.
Several council members refusing
the compromise cited the abuse of Iraqi
detainees by U.S. soldiers and Secre-
tary-General Kofi Annan's opposition to
renewing the exemption for a third year.
Before the council meeting, Spain
and China said they would abstain if the
resolution was put to a vote and Philip-
pines Ambassador Lauro Baja, the current
council presidents said he doubted that
the United States had the minimum nine
"yes" votes needed to adopt it.
Campus switches to Web-based EIS system
The new portal will provide access to
university information as well as
Eagle Mail, 'to do' lists and more
Paul Knight
Staff Writer
NT's Web services have
undergone a complete alter-
ation, creating a new portal
for students to access uni-
versity information over the
Internet.
The new portal, similar to
the former service, ASSIST,
is a result of the university
switching to a completely
Web-based software system
called the Enterprise Infor-
mation System.
According to Lareen Ham-
ilton, assistant registrar, the
fall semester will be the first
to be "totally EIS."
"It's a nice Web site that
students are going to enjoy,"
Hamilton said. "It has a lot
more than just registration."
The new system's Web-
based architecture differs
from the old system, which
drew information from a
mainframe. The university
has used the mainframe sys-
tem since fall 1984.
On July 2, the university
will mail postcards to current
students containing informa-
tion explaining the new sys-
tem in detail.
"We want to avoid stu-
dents from being in the dark,"
Hamilton said.
The university began pre-
paring students of the change
when it published informa-
tion about the EIS in the fall
2004 schedule of classes.
The news of the change
may have caused student
worry, but the new system
still makes use of the same
EUID and password required
by ASSIST.
Students will be given a
new identification number in
the system, but it will not af-
fect the login process.
Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner,
student computing services
manager, said the new num-
ber is the result of the univer-
sity wanting to use a number
other than a student's social
security number for identifi-
cation purposes.
"This number doesn't ap-
ply anywhere else in the uni-
verse except in the [NT] uni-
verse," Hinkle-Turner said.
"A more generic number is a
more secure number."
Once logged in to the sys-
tem, students can take advan-
tage of several features that
were not available with the
old system
Some of these new features
include a link to EagleMail,
a My To Do List and a spell
check personal dictionary.
"Students will have access
to all the same information,
probably more," Hamilton
said. "They will be able to per-
sonalize and design the Web
