AGGIE ADVOCATES SWEEP
FLORIDA!
By T. Gerald Treece - Director of Advocacy
The Battling Aggie
Advocates of South Texas
swept through Florida in
early February, not only
winning top team honors,
but also garnering most of
the individual awards at the
1998 Nova Southeastern
University "Round Robin"
National Moot Court
Competition in Fort Lauder-
dale.
First, the team of
Bridgett Overlease, Andy
Edwards, and Rick Lopez
won their four preliminary
rounds and then defeated
Florida State in the finals to
ciaim top honors. Ms.
Overlease was named top
individual advocate for the
appellant and the team won
the award for best
appellant's brief.
There's even more good
news! Our other squad of
Chad Points, Angie Davis
and Jefferson Read also
went undefeated before
losing in the semi-finals, but
their written brief was
named best appellee's brief

Spring Banquet
Scheduled for
Friday, April 3rd
By Sloane Fleckman, Mid-Law Senator
Clear your schedule for
Friday, April 3. That is the
night for our annual Spring
Banquet and it is going to be
better than ever this year.
The Banquet will be held at
the Westin Oaks Hotel in the
Gallería.
The tickets will be $12
and for that low price you get
a great meal formally served
to you, two free drink
tickets, a chance to mingle
with A&M Law Center
students, administrators
and faculty in a relaxed
social atmosphere, and
entertainment from DJ
Robin Janson.
The banquet is often
referred to as our "Prom."
However, unlike any prom
you've been to, there is no
need to waste money on
limousines, corsages, or
tuxes and gowns. The suit
or dress you have is appro-
priate and the party is wait-
ing. Unfortunately, in the
past, people have arranged
to have their own parties
waiting in the hotel rooms
upstairs—which defeats the
purpose of getting together
with the whole school. So
this year we are making sure
the party downstairs will be
better than anything up in
the hotel rooms.
Drink prices will be
better than anywhere else in
town—and you get 2 FREE
drink tickets and a DJ ready
to take all your requests.
You will also definitely want
to be around when your
name is called to receive
one of the great door prizes
we will be giving away
throughout the night.
If you have never been
to the South Texas College
of Law Spring Banquet, then
let this one set the standard.

Read Addresses Concerns
By Dean Frank T. Read
As your dean, I feel it's
important for you to know
what is happening as the
political fighting increases
surrounding our affiliation
with Texas A&M University.
Texas A&M University and
South Texas have a legally
binding agreement.
That agreement was
approved by both the Texas
A&M Regents and the
South Texas Board of
Directors. To change that
agreement, both boards
would have to agree to
amend the contract. Despite
press accounts, neither
board has made any
request of the other to
change any aspect of the
agreement.
We do know that Texas
A&M University officials are
talking to the Higher Educa-
tion Coordinating Board to
try to resolve conflicts about
the powers of the respective
boards. We expect that
those talks will go on and will
be amicably resolved.
However, South Texas is not
subject to the Higher
Education Coordinating Boand.
Dean Frank T. Read
Officials of the Coordinat-
ing Board were consulted
extensively prior to the
signing of the deal. It was
only after the agreement
was signed, and after
