Sports Docket
G>mpetitlon ... Spectacle... Celebration
by Al Orenberg
and Gregg Schwartz
The "promoters" of the STCL
Sports Intramural program are
certainly deserving of much grati-
tude for the overwhelming suc-
cess they have brought to the
school via the court, the field, or
the fairway.
In its first full year of program-
ming, STCL, a private institution,
with the aid of no formal funding,
has held numerous team sports
competitions as well as individual
type events to foster a sense of
pride and achievement in our-
selves and our school. The
turnout for the intramural pro-
gram has been nothing less than
excellent, thanks to Larry Hatley
and of course you (us) the
students and faculty.
Due to the high interest this
year, next year's SB A has plans
for a three-person intramural
board to coordinate and promote
all sports activities. One of the
effects of such board, it is hoped,
will be to procure funding for all
events so the program may secure
safe and enjoyable facilities in
close proximity to STCL.
Before an up-to-date report on
the spring semester play, many,
many thanks are in order to the
countless individuals who gave
their valuable time to assist as
officials, scorekeepers, ect., etc.
Basketball
The site: Denver Harbor Gym.
The contestants: No, not the
Denver Nuggets of the NBA
featuring Skywalker David
Thompson, but rather thirteen
multi-talented teams composed of
STCL students, alumni, and
faculty. With excellent assistance
and guidance from Larry Hatley,
Gary Aboud, Gerry Hoover and
Debbi Kihlman, the round robin,
7-week tournament was held to
determine the top two teams.
Emerging from the pack were
Treece's Terrors and Jay's Jok-
ers, after pinning defeats, respec-
tively, on OTIS and Bennie and
the Jets in the semis. In the final
game at Northwest Academy,
Treece's Terrors, featuring
STCL's Doctor of the Dunk,
T. Gerald Treece, soundly defeat-
ed Jay's Jokers 72-40.
Revenging an early season
defeat in which Rocket Rosen
sank a 35-footer on the buzzer to
lift Jay's Jokers to an upset
victory, the championship game
convincingly established Treece's
Terrors as premier roundball
handlers.
Golf
In the spirit of the traditional
Professional Golf Association's
annual championship, STCL has
inaugurated the "Challenge
Cup." The golf program is
conducted at beautiful Memorial
Park under the guidance of the
jovial Big Lee. Twenty-five
golfers in two flights have been
participating in the match play
format, slated to conclude on
April 20.
The Annual STCL Golf Tourna-
ment featuring medal play will be
held during the forthcoming fall
semester. Possible club sites
include River Oaks, Tejas, and El
Dorado.
All golfers interested in assist-
ing in the traditional STCL event
are encouraged to contact Bob
Schwartz.
Soccer
In the face of uncompromising
odds, the STCL intrepid footmen
have completed their first full
season in the Houston Soccer
Association.
Early Sunday mornings, inces-
sant rain, and the failure of
anyone to communicate effective-
ly with officials (except Mike
McGee), did not tarnish the spirit
and comraderie of the team.
Co-captains Hans and Tons Mas-
sar have forged lobby loungers
into a multi-talented array of
skilled soccer players. The team
is eagerly looking forward to the
new soccer season slated to begin
shortly after final exams.
All aspiring footmen are en-
couraged to contact Hans or Tons
and practice, practice, prac-
tice . . .
Tennis
Close to the calibre of the River
Oaks Open, promoters Tommy
Fountain and Jan Sadick have
organized the first annual STCL
Tennis Tournament.
Students dreaming about de-
throning Bjorn and Martina
signed up to claim the title as the
premier tennie bum of STCL.
Some 75 gutsy individuals are

Some 200 eager fielders played

atmosphere, the sport has been
integrated with the addition of
exceptional female talent and has
turned out to be enjoyable while
competitive. Many thanks to
John Healey and Larry Hatley for
a superb job in organizing the
largest sports activity of the year.
Inside info has it that Tal Smith

the STCL league as the Astros are
in need of some "smarts" in the

comes Jay Pearl man!
