Honor Court
Opinion Favors
Larry Hatley
At a January meeting of the
SB A Board of Governors, an
election was held to fill the
position of Treasurer, which had
become vacant due to the resigna-
tion of John Yanchunis. Candi-
dates for that office included Fran
Jackson, Robert Kennedy and
Larry Hatley. Votes were taken
by secret ballot. Mark Hill,
Resident, then counted the
votes, and announced Larry Hat-
ley as the winner. The result was
substantiated by Judge Ramirez
who was present at the meeting.
Controversy over the result
ensued, and the honesty of
certain persons was questioned.
The Board of Governors was then
requested to file a formal election
contest with the Honor Court. As
this duty was summarily neglect-
ed and when no action was taken
or forthcoming, Dick Greco, as an
interested member of the SBA,
filed such a contest.
On March 24, the Honor Court
requested the Board of Governors
to annonymously submit an exact
duplicate of their vote in the
previous election, written in the
same handwriting as before. A
majority of the Honor Court, in
executive session, with Sherry
Strickland, Phil Bryant, Neal
Hirschfeld and Randy Stout pre-
sent, then matched these hand-
writing exemplars with the actual
votes cast in the January election.
All votes matched. The result
was 4-2-1.
Larry Hatley was voted in as
Treasurer in a fair election.
Although legitimate questions
may have been raised by the
methods used in this election, the
Honor Court has yet to recognize
them, and in consideration of the
need for harmony within the SBA,
the Court renders this, its
opinion.
STCL Teams
Sweep Regionals
Continued from page 1
tournament sponsored by the
American Trial Lawyers Associa-
tion in St. Louis, Mo., marked the
fourth consecutive time this year
when STCL has won or tied for
best brief.
The A TLA team, composed of
Catherine Bertrand, Joe Bailey,
Lamar McCorkle, and Craig
Lewis, won "top team" honors at
the meet as well. They and their
coach, Dr. Gerald Treece, will
travel to Montreal, Canada, this
summer for the national finals
against three other regional win-
ners. In the semifinal round South
Texas will compete against the
team from the University of
Mississippi, and the University of
Tennessee team will go up
against the team from the Uni-
versity of Wyoming.
The STCL team defeated the
University of Oklahoma in the
semifinals at the regional meet,
and then outscored the North
Dakota Law School team in the
finals.
Commenting on the outstand-
ing performance of STCL advo-
cates this year, Dr. Treece said,
"This is the most incredible
year" he has ever had with an
advocacy program, as the teams
have emerged from every tourna-
ment with at least one trophy.
"We have a chance at a 'grand
slam* in best brief," he com-
mented, because we now have
won this honor at both the
National Appellate Advocacy
Tournament and International
Law Moot Court regional compe-
tition, and the state tournament is
comming up in the summer."
