3o Mail On Tuesdays.
Tuesday evening when the Alice
stage failed to bring through mail
the people of Brownsville merely
considered it another of the occas-
ional lapses which occur in Uncle
Sam's Brownsville service. But it
develops that the failure was the
first of a regular thing for the fu
ture; that is until Col. Lott's rail-a-nad
reaches Brownsville. The fol
lowing letter received by Postmaster
Sharpe from the acting superinten-
cdent of the railway mail service at
Fort Worth written August 28 ex-
plains the matter:
Postmaster Brownsville Tex.
Sir. On account of change of time
card of Skidmore and Alice line
whereby the clerk in train 33 of
that line now leaves Skidmore upon
arrival of San Antonio and Corpus
Christi train 21 the dispatch of
inner registered sacks San Antonio
to Brownsville will be made from
the San Antonio postoffice daily
zept Sundays. You will return
aacx uauy except rnuays.
Tlie mail that leaves San Antonio
Sundays arrives here Tuesdays so
xts&emsthat hereafter we will be
cutoff from all Sunday mail as
well as the registered articles.
There has been some protest of-
fered by other towns affected by the
change made in train service on the
San Antonio and Aransas Pass but
it is scarcely probably that Browns
ville will object. We are easy here
.and the putting off our Sunday
tuail until mafiana is only in line
with our own customs.

Oeorge G. Clough has received a
letter from a prominent Brownsville
gentleman who wishes him to come
there and superintend the planting
of an acre of pine apples. Mr.
Clough has the matter under ad-
visement. He says he sees no
reason why pineapples should not
flourish in all the country between
here ami Brownsville. He returned
yesteii1 iy from the Flour Bluff
neigh ix rhood where he saw pears
figs and apples growing on Mr.
Singer - farm. He says he never
saw more healthy vigorous fruit
and was surprised that so little at
tention has been paid to fruit cul
ture in this section. He was espe-
cially enthusiastic at the fine ap-
pearance of the pears and predicts
that this is destined to become a
great pear growing section.
"And I must not neglect to tell
you about the cassava planted a

an average of four feet high and

Jiave ever seen growing in Florida."
poration whose ultimate aim is to
work the get-rich-quick policy by
deceiving the people to the utmost
limit of their ability. London and
Mexican capitalists though said to
be worth from ten to twenty mil-
lion pesos of the depreciated Mex
ican currency are doing a banking
business of hundreds of millions of
greenback pesos strictly upon per-
sonal reputation and individual
promises to pay. Pay in what?
There is the rub. There is no other
substantial guaranty in sight to re-
deem a single Mexican dollar with
any standard value.
Who would not look with sus-
picion upon a hank of issue which
has a free and unlimited (carte de
blanc) to flood the country every
day with thousands of paper dol-
lars the current value of which
fluctuates between 30 and 40 cents j

both sides of the Rio Grande tak-
ing into consideration the active
construction work being prosecuted
by the St. L. B. and M. and the
earl' promise of initial movements
on the part of the S. A. and A. P.
and the possibility of the Orient
being built through the Rio Grande
Valley to Brownsville.
Little seems to be known of the
progress being made by the Mex-
National people therefore a few
jotting may be acceptable. A short
time since chief Engineer James
M. Reed Ass't. Chief Engineer G.
P. Wolf and Capt. Billy Scott made
a trip to this point and the fol-
lowing information was imparted
to Mr. do -Lasso through whose
courtesy I am enabled to furnish
in to the neaders of The Herald.
On the first of August fifteen
miles of grading had been com-
pleted from Monterey and it was
suspicion upon an institution like
that run by a few London and
Mexican capitalists having an ex-
clusive license to monopolize a
vicarious business in a field broad
as all Mexico.
If such a scheme does not smack
loudly of the free and irresponsible
wild cat money of the dead past
what does it resemble? '
I confess to a feeling of inability
to do this subject merited justice.
Perhaps from the suggestions I sub-
mit an abler pen may take it in
hand giving due justice. However
I will proceed.
Of course it remains for the future
to demonstrate the correctness of
these surmises as to the outcome of
Mexico's present monetary system.
Yet one cannot help thinking the
time will come when there will be
such a financial crisis as will shake
the foundation of our sister repub-
lic. The Butcher's Son of 1500 was
about riuht wnen ho proclaimed
have 200 mules and GOO men at
work. The whose construction to
be completed within eighteen
months. The engineers have finish-
ed the permanent survey which
has been approved by the Mexican
government as far as Romones.
The line adopted is from Monterey
to Rancho los Romones through
Aldamas near which will be the
crossing of the San Juan river.
From thence to La Quemada San
Pedro and Rancho Azucar where
the road will curve toward Mata-
moros arul pass within three miles
of Camargo.
The mute leaves out all the
prominent towns between Camargo
and Monterey. It will he built in
r.s dirrct a line as possible as it is
considered that should it deviate
from a direct line the expense in-
voiced would bo greater than be
nefits to be derived from the
mining district;.

i'rom tinio immemorial it has
been said that Mexico was a very
rich country. Granted it is it can
aiso oe saiu mat ner nencs- neces
sary to exalt a nation have been
sadly neglected and at the dawn of
the Twentieth Cfiitury they still lie
undeveloped. Her mountains it is
said are fairly underlaid with the
precious metals which only needs
the command of nervu and muscle
to bring it forth for utilization.
I notice by late statistics the
mining output of gold in Mexico
amounts to over $15000000 during
the past year and very probably
this will be much larger in the fu-
ture by reason of improved methods
in mining and machinery. This is
another good argument why Mexico
should abandon'her present mon-
etary system and adopt the gold
standard.
From present indications it seems
that she preferred to be hood-winked
by her own financiers and for
eign capitalists since time out of
mind.
How long will the great mass of
her people the merchants the me-
chanics the professions and trades
peoples suffer this God only know!
