The Ntw Yorker Says 3udge Par-
ker the Jinn of the Hour.
Washington Jan. 31 Jn an In-tervi-
v. expn-s-rly for the Journal
Bird S. Coler who made such a
magnificent race for governor of
New York last fall declared today
that he was for Alton B. Parker ns
the democratic nominee for pres-
idfi t hi the next campaign. He
said further that he believed the
entire New York democratic delega-
tion would line up for Parker and
the distinguished jurist could carry
New York against any man the re-
puldicaus might put Qlit.
Mr. Coler is stopping" at the Ar-
lington where he has been daily in
the company of man' democratic
leaders who chanced to he here at
the -:une time. Richard Olney
who has been prominently men-
tioned ?i a presidential possibility;
foi:i: r Secretary of the Interior
II. ke Smith John G. Carlise for-m-r
Congressman Tucker of Vir-
g nia and others are at the Arling-
.V v. While National politics did
nut form a prominent topic of their
conversation there was an under-curr-nt
of political gossip which
served to bring out many interest-
ing facts relating to the next cam-
paign. Mr. Coler who is sure to be the
next democratic candidate for gov-
ernor of New York said in speak-
ing of Judge Parker:
"He is the man to lead the dem-
ocratsHo victory in 1904 and I
firmly believe ho will be the nom
inee of the party it would not
surprise me to see his name the
only one presented at the next dem-
ocratic convention.
"I am for Judge Parker because
he i the man to carry New York
lie has never been beaten in the
fttate and his strength and popu-
larity is growing daily.
'The democratic delegation of
New York I believe will line up
solidly for Parker when the time
comes. Nearly every member of
the delegation is for him now"
Mr. Smith's views on Parker are
well known. He believes Parker
will be the nominee and like Mr.
Coler looks for such a growth of
Parker popularity throughout the
country that no other name will be
presented to the convention.

THE WONDERFUL
FLYING FISH.
The mystic Hying fish is chiefly
an inhabitant of the southern seas.
Of its wondrous exploits most all
have heard says the Marine Jour-
nal yet few can see the fish for the
first time without a gasp of amase-
ment. without a fepling that they
are looking at the miraculous. It
is this fish which has been the
source of more untruthful stories
than any other in all the seas.
There is no question that the fly-
ing tish has wings like a bird; and
it really flies yet not as a bird. It
does not flap the wing-like fins
upon which it is. borne nor when
once launched in the air can it
change its course by any movement
of its wings until it dips again into
the water yet it will pass a ship
making ten knots an hour and tra-
vel in the air sometimes 500 feet at
at a time.
The English Postmaster General
says that if England's mix-up in
the Venezuelan affair places in jeo-
pardy the good relations existing
between this country and his own
it will be a calamity to the civiliz-
ed world.
Otto Koehler of San Antonio
'thinks the new invention to extract
power direct from coal which he is
backing will work a revolution in
the industrial life of the country.
