SOLDIER BAOLY WOUNDED.
Shot Three Times By a Comrade
Who Was Arrested
At Once.
Last night about fifteen minutes
after ten o'clock Private Walter M.
Van Campon of Company C Fourth
U. S. Infantry was shot and prob-
ably mortally wounded by Private
French L. Ewing of the same corn-pan)-.
The shooting occured on
Elizabeth street near the wholesale
grocery store conducted by W. B.
Austin. So far as can be learned
it seems that the two men quarreled
before the shooting having had
some previous dispute and Ewing
asserts that he was struck over the
head by Van Campon. whereupon
he drew his pistol and fired three
shots. Each shot took effect. Van
Campon grappled with Ewing
endeavoring to prevent him from
shooting again. When the of-
ficers reached the scene a few
seconds alter tne snots were
fired the two were struggling to
gether Van Campon being un-
derneath and holding Ewing around
the neck with one arm while his
other hand held Ewinq's right hand
in which was the pistol. City
Marshal L. II. Bates and Ranger
Harry Wallace were first to reach
the scene and City Policeman Felix
Calderon came up almost at the
same moment. They seized Ewing
disarmed him and took him to
jail while the wounded man was
taken into a nearby saloon and the
post surgeon Dr. J. K. Combe sent
for.
Ewing received three wounds one
bullet entering over the left hip
passing through the body and lodg-
ing over right hip to the rear from
which place it was cut out by Dr.
Combe. One entered the" chest near
the extremity of the breast bone.
and lodged in the body not being
located yet and one passed through
the palm of the left hand shatter-
ins the bones. The wound caused
by the ball passjng through the
body just over the hips is the most
serious as- it probably pierced the
intestines in which case it would
prove fatal. The wounded man was
taken to the hospital shortly after
the shooting.
Private Van Campon who was
shot is from Wilkesbarre Penn
sylvania. He is a small man but
full of grit and held on to his as-
sailant although thrice wounded.
He stood up after the latter was ar-
rested "and walked a short distance.
Private Ewing who is now under
arrest is from Bellfont Ohio.
At two p. m. it was learned that
there is no hope of saving Van
Campon's life as the bullet through
the abdomen undoubtedly pierced
the intestines.

settled all over me particularly in the
abdomen. I was in almost constant pain.
I consulted a physician and took his
medicine lor a month and without any
relief. I then decided 1 would try your

when I did so. I -noticed a change in &
few days and felt encouraged to continue
taking Tine of Cardui and my patience
was rewarded for in two weeks my pains
