Worcester Mas:-. Jan.- 3. That
Valentines are still popular is
proven by a Worcester firm shipping
four freight cars of them this week.
It was the largest order ever filled.
There were 1800000 valentines in
the consignment which went to a
big w lKtlcsale 'liuuso in Chicago.
The shipments this season began in
August and increased steadily
until the factory bad to install new
machinery and run night and day.

is ti.:.niii.-d uv the rise in the
prices of steel and tin. While the
exjl.in:it!on may hold good in
many cases it merely shifts the
blame from one trust to another
ince the production of raw mater-
ials is also largely controlled by
tru.-ts; the fact still remains that
about nine-tenths of trust-made ar-
ticles increased in price. The ex-
haustive study made by Professor
Jcnks for a few selected artiei
leaves no doubt that the margin be-
tween the selling price and cost of
material has been raised by combi-
nation. If the conditions were ex-
ceptional in these cases it would
have been easy for the combined
jrd i: ts of other articles to demon-
strate it before the commission by
figure- drawn from their books. Xo
-ucli testimony has been offered
and the eonclusions of Professor
J'-nks stand iu;c:itrovcrted.

DIAMOND CUTTING.
Not only is diamond cutting not
a specially highly paid occupation
but it is one involving a most
humiliating system of espionage in
the worker. Each man has to
stric tly account for the stones he
receives on going to work in the
morning and the count" has to be
carefully taken when the unfinished
work is handed in at night to be
locked up in a safe against the
return of the workmen the next
day. The po.--Utilities of thrft are
great though a dishonest workman
know that an attempt to dispose
of an unfinished stone would bring
suspicion upon him wherever the
attempt was made.
