FLEEING FROM PLAGttJ'1
People of Maiuilan Panic stricken.
Disease Abates in Yirulenco.
Mazathin Mi x . Jan. :'. Uiere
s some abatement iti thi- virulence
t the plague and hardly half of
the ( people attackinl are dying.
There were seven death- today. The
lopie still continue to il-c from
the city and this may spread the
di.-raso in neighboring towns where
the refugees have found new homes.
For the present physicians say
it is not safe to rely on any tem-
porary diminution in the violence
of the disease as epidemics vary
day to day and are influenced
l.irgi-ly by weather.
So many police have been taken
ill that tfie prisoners in the town
jail have boen confined to the care
of the soldiers of the Eleventh Bat-
talion. The poor people are averse
to making known eases of plague
and the authorities found in the
kitchen of one house the body or a
man who had died of the plague
buried under a floor. The authori-
ties urge the people not to conceal
ca.- s .if illness.
0ving to a strike among tl.c
butchers there is a scarcity of meat.
If my friends have alabaster boxes
full of perfumes of sympa'y
ami affect ions which they intend
Jo break over my dead body I
would rather they would bring their
out in my weary days and open
them that I may be refreshed ai .'
cheered by them while I need tlien.-
I would rather have a bare coffin
without a ilouer and a funeral
without a eulogy than life uithout
the sweetest of love and sympathy.
Let us learn to anoint our friend
beforehand for burial. Postmortem
kindnesses do not cheer the burden-
ed spirit. Flowers on th? coffin
cast no fragrance oer the weary
days of our lives. Ram s Horn
PLAY BY ALFRED AUSTIN.
Alfred Austin the poet laureate
of England has written a play for
Beerlmhin Tret? the theme of which
is the battle of Flodden Field.
THE DEAR OLD MOTHER.
j Time has scattered the snowy
j flakes on her brow plowed deep
furrdWs in her cheek but i.- she not
sweet ami beautiful now? The lips
which have kissed many a hot teax
from the childish cheek are the
sweetest lips in all the world.
The pye is dim yet it o .- with
the rapt radiance of a holy low
which can never fade.
Oh. y- -he is a dear old n other.
Her .-and- of time are nearly run
out but feeble as she is the' will
for you than any other on earth.
Y'ou cannot walk into midnight
v here she cannot see you: you ean-
not enter a prison whose bars shall
keep her out: you can never mount
a .-c.ilToM too high for her t- reach
that she may kiss and bless you.
