When Andrew Johnson was at;
Niagara the President was visited j
by some British officials from I
Canada who invited him to return j
their call but he declined to go
abroad on a ceremonial visit. The ;
newspapers of the time report that j
he and Secretary Seward crossed '
.over to Table Rock by way of thej
suspension bridge which required j
a tempoiary expatriation. It is!
said also that President Grant
out on a drive crossed the Niagara
River to the Canada side but im-
mediately returned. Nothing dread-
ful happened in either case. There
is no law forbidding the President
to travel abroad.
You will never regret having introduced these goods into your household.

Lake Erie Drying Up.
Bosrou Transcript.
That is the startling report that
the chief engineer of the marine
department of Canada has just
made. He has returned to Ottawa
from a tour of inspection of the
upper lakes and states that Lake
Erie is lower than was ever known
to be the case before. This con
dition is due he thinks to a series
of dry seasons to the drain made
by the power of development works
at Niagara Falls and to the fact
that dredging the Tonawanda Canal
has made it easier for water to es-
cape from the lake. He considers
it imperative that the United
States Government adopt remedial
measures at an early date else na
vigation upon its present basis will
be seriously interfered with.
