ABOUT TOWN.
There will be another baik at
Santa Cruz tomorrow night.
Watermelons are now retailing
at 12 to IS cents each Mexican
money.
Public examinations of the city
shools in Matamoros will begin
next month.
A number of Mexican families
.have gone from here lately to seek
work in the interior of the state.
The schooner Mary Ann sailed
from Corpus yesterday with a
cargo of merchandise for this port.
Many pleasure seekers will take
advantage of the Rio Grande px-
cnrsion to visit the Point tomor
row.
The contract has been given to
Contractor Martin Hanson to re-
pair and paint the Hidalgo county
court house.
The work of putting new wires
" on the military telegraph line was
' today completed on this division
of the line into Brownsville.
The theatrical troupe of Sres.
Mouteleone and Villalongin will
stiortly give a series of perform
ances in the Reform theatre in
Matamoros.
A grand excursion is announced
for tomorrow over the Rio Grande
railroad to Poiut Isabel at the
nsnal low excursion rates. These
rates place it within the reach of
all to enjoy an outing at the seaside.
The new schedule on the Rio
Grande railroad goes into effect
this evening. The regular train
went down to the Point as usual
this morning and will come up
this afternoon to go down again
at five o'clock.
The town is getting dnll now
that federal court is ended For
the next two or three months there
will not be much to report except
the going and coming of passen-
gers toaud from the Point that is
after the school exercises are over
Much complaint is heard from
different portions of the county of
short pasturage. The rains we
have had were very unequally dis
tributed and the situation is grow-
ing serious in many'large pastures.
Some have resorted to breaking
down branches of trees to feed cat
tie on the foliage.

to reach Matamoros this evening.
Mrs..B. V. Ruthven is expected
to arrive this afternoon from Hi-

Sheriff Closner Inspector -of
Customs Chavez and County Clerk
Schunior of Hidalgo will remain
here until next Monday.
Miss Agnes Douglass who has
been teaching school at Hidalgo

home by the Matamoros train tins
afternoon to spend the vacation.
Murderer of Sheriff Morris Sur-

Sheriff and a deputy.
A telegram received here this
morning from Deputy U. S. Mar-
shal Hanson of Laredo says that
Sheriff Morris of Karnes county
has been surrounded by a posse
near Gonzales Tex. after a fierce
running fight in which he killed
Sheriff Glover of Gonzales county
and one of his deputies.
