hundreds of millions anuallyi but
the cotton planters do not become
millionaires thereby. The man
who does mUke the millious out

TO CHRISTEN SHIPS.
New York World.
Miss Ruth Lawrence daughter
of Supreme Court Judge Lawrenct-
of New York City- will christen
the United State torpedo boat
Lawrence when it is lanuched ai
Weymouth Mass. on Wednesday
next-.
One month later Mis Lucy
Shaler Macdunough of Philadel-
phia will act a similar part for a
sister boat the Macdouough now
being built alongside the Lawrence
but a little behind iu construction.
To break a bottle of champagne
over the bows of these vessels the
fair .young womeu who will act as
sponsors for them have postponed
their wedding das. It is a tradi-
tion that an 'unmarried woman
must christen a naval ship and the
weddiugs m these particular Cases
have been postponed for two yeHrs
from the time the keels of the
destroyers were laid in fact.
The navy department is naming
the vessels of the toipedo boat and
the torpedo boat de'sUoyer Class af-
ter Barly heroes of the servic?e.
Then to rouud out the sentiment a
charming descendant of the partic-
ular hero so honored is found to
cnristeu the boat. Genealogical ex-
jperts are employed iu this search.
Two years ago the Fore River
Engine company of yeymduth and
Qniucy was awarded a contract for
two torpedo boat destroyers. The
men whose memories were regard-
ed as most worthy were the old sea
fighters Lawrence and Macdou-
ough. The "Dout give up' the"
ship" of Lawrence is one of the
dearest possessions bf American
history.
Tlie experts dh gehe.ildgy seledt-
ed Miss Ruth Lawrence of New
York and Miss Lucy Macdouough
of Philadelphia to christen the
vessels. Bdth young women were
engaged but both accepted the
honor' tfnd declined to name the
other day ttutil the trim engines of
destruction were launched.
