fluid extract, the dose of which is from 5 to 20 minims
(0.3 to 1.2 gramme).
HELENIN.
This body is obtained from the root of Inida hclenzlum.
It is represented by the formula C6HsO.
Physical Properties.- Helenin occurs in colorless
crystalline needles having a melting-point of 2300 F.
(iio0 C.).
Solubility.-This medicament is readily soluble in hot
alcohol, ether, and the oils; scarcely soluble in water.
Therapeutic Applications.-This drug has been used
as an antiseptic and antispasmodic in whooping-cough.
It has also rendered good service in the treatment of
the diarrhoea of phthisical patients. It has likewise
given favorable results in the treatment of leucorrhcea
accompanied with catarrhal endometritis.
Administration.-Helenin is administered, alone or in
combination with inulin, in doses of from s to ( of a
grain (o.oI to.o.02 gramme) in the course of twenty-four
hours.
HELLEBOREIN.
This substance, a glucoside, is obtained from the
rhizome of several species of the Helcborus genus. Its
chemical composition is thus formulated: C261,1,O,.
Physical Properties.-This glucoside appearsl- as a
crystalline body.
Solubility.-This drug is perfectly soluble in water.
Therapeutic Applications.-Hcell/borcii has been em-
ployed chiefly as a substitute for digitalis. It also pos-
sesses anaesthetic properties said to be superior to those
of cocaine.
Administration.-The dose of helleborcin is from .--
to 4 of a grain (o.oo6 to o0.0oi6 gramme).
HEMOL.
A compound obtained by the action of zinc-dust on
the coloring matter of the blood.
