Rodeo association hosts auction today
The Tarleton Rodeo
Association is hosting an
auction fundraiser today at
the Dairy, Farm & Ranch
Show at Lone Star Arena,
located on Hwy 377. The
money that is raised will
fund the continued construc-
tion of the Rodeo Teaching
and Activity Facility which
includes adding lights,
building permanent
restrooms and caliche work.
A silent auction will take
place with bids ending at
2p.m. Tarleton graduate,
former NIRA and PRCA bull
rider Matt Blevins, will serve
as auctioneer. The Tarleton
rodeo te^ms hope to raise
over $250,000.
Entries in the auction
include:
• Luxury Suite for 20 people
to Lone Star Park Horse
Racing; includes valet park-
ing, free admission to any
race night during Oct. or

cy Chancellor Graved was a
genteel, compassionate man
whose dedication to educa-
tion and commitment to stu-
dents will be missed by us ail
in higher education and in
the state,"
Prior to his A&M System
appointment, Graves was
the Visiting Tom Slick
Professor of World Peace at
the University of Texas at
Austin's Lyndon B, Johnson
School of Public Affairs.
Graves, a native of the Texas
Panhandle town of Roaring
Springs, retired from active
military service in June 1996.
His last military duty was as
superintendent of the United
States Military Academy at
West Point, N.Y. As presi-
dent of the academy and
commanding officer of the
military installation for five
years, he was responsible for
the education and leadership
development of 8,000 future
military officers and 12,000
faculty instructors, employ-
ees and family members in a
diverse, mixed-gender work
environment. He reported to
cabinet-level national offi-
cials and coordinated regu-
larly with members of
Congress and their staffs.
Graves has performed
numerous national and inter-
national staff duties. He was
assistant to the chairmen of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff
William Crowe and Colin
Powell. In that post he rep-
resented the uniformed mili-
tary on Secretary of State
James Baker's negotiating
team in crucial international
negotiations on arms control,
reunification of Germany
and Operation Desert Storm.
He managed a $1.8 billion
facility maintenance and
construction program. He
also commanded military
combat units at tactical and
operational levels, including
a 3,000-soldier parachute
engineer brigade at Fort
Bragg, N.C., and a 700-sol-
dier heavy engineer battalion
in Germany

than 15 years in Washington^
D.CV and in College Station,"
said Bob Gates, president of
Texas A&M University. "In
the White House situation
room and at Texas A&M,
Howard was the soul of'horv-
esty, integrity and duty.-For
me, Howard was and always
will be a hero before he
became ill and after."
Graves graduated from
the U.S. Military Academy in
June 1961. Later, he attended
Oxford University in
England as a Rhodes Scholar,
earning bachelor of arts,
master of arts and master of
letters degrees.
A memorial service was
held at Grace Bible Church in
College Station, Tarleton
State University lowered its
flag to half-staff on Sept. 16
in his memory.
