Show me the money; or at
least show me the jobs.
It is so hard to find a job
in Stephenville, let alone a
good one, One cannot be
picky about a job in a college
town. Not only do Tarleton
students have to compete
against each other, but they
must also compete against a
big high school full of
teenagers trying to get their
first job and other unem-
ployed citizens.
1 think that there should
be more college friendly jobs
in Stephenville. Businesses
close so early here, it's unbe-
lievable. Most of the depart-
ment stores close from 7 and
9p;m. That is unheard of
where I am from. College
students stay up until all
hours of the night and early
morning. So where are all of
the 24-hour stores?
It is also hard to find a job
that will work around your
class schedule. If you set
your schedule for classes
only on Tuesday and
Thursday, then all the job
openings are for people who
can work Tuesday and
Thursday. It's as if these
things happen on purpose.
Businesses should be
more understanding
towards college students
when it comes to schedules.
Some classes are only
offered at one time during
the semester or only once a
year. You have to sign up for
classes when they are avail-
able.
What are we supposed to
do when the job market is
scarce? Mom and dad can't
afford to send us that much
money every month. Some
parents can t afford to send
any money.
I immediately began job
hunting when I moved to
Stephenville in August 2001.
I was not hired until May of
2002. I have a, great work
history, my resume was in
tip-top shape and I was well
qualified for all the jobs I
applied for. It still took me
almost 10 months to find a
job.
The job I finally landed
was in retail, which I had
prior experience in; The bad
thing I learned was why the
employee turnover rate at
this particular company was
so high. I guess I should
have been more picky, but a
job is a job.
I think that my bad expe-
rience with that company
has allowed me to grow pro-
fessionally. Maybe that is
what college jobs are all
about. After spending
months and months looking
for a job you take the first
one that is offered to you for
a steady paycheck. Then
you discover that this partic-
ular job is not what you are
cut out for. So, after you
quit and reflect on your
experience you learn that
some jobs are more about
teaching then money in the |
wallet.
I know the job market |
looks really scarce right j
now, but it will pick up.

I thought that everyone
should know about this. I
have recently come across
some information that the
Stephenville community is
talking about setting up a
law that would only allow
three unrelated people to
reside in a house. At this
point, I am unsure if this
would also affect those living
in apartments, townhouses
or duplexes.
This is ridiculous. The
cost of living has already
skyrocketed, even if you
have roommates, now they
want to decide how many
roommates we can have. Do
they not understand that we
are college students who
don't have a lot of money?
How are we supposed to pay
rent from the two roommates
we lost when we scrape the
bottom of the barrel every
month just to pay a quarter
or a fifth of all the bills right
now?
Some community mem-
bers have expressed con-
cerns about a decrease in
their property value when
college students live next
door. Apparently, living
with more than two other
people makes the neighbor's
place look like trash. Others
have complained about noise
levels and lack of parking.
Ah-ha! So it's our fault that
houses are too close together,
the streets are narrow and no
one in this town can afford a
driveway.
College students bring
approximately $50 million to
Stephenville each year
through use of businesses,
restaurants and department
stores. So, if a law passes
that limits the number of res-
idents per household where
will we go? I imagine that
some will "illegally" live with
friends while others will sim-
ply pay outrageous prices to
live in an apartment. Then
all the apartments will fill up
causing yet another housing
shortage. Coincidence, I
think not.
A housing shortage would
allow the city or apartment
owners to build more apart-
ments or other housing to
make more money. Alas, the
true colors shine through.
How did I guess that in
the end it was all about
money?
So what should be done
about this? Well, we could
voice our opinion to the city
through City Council meet-
ing, The main thing is that
'we "have a say" about what
goes on in Stephenville that
could potentially affect us.
No, it has not become a law
yet, nor has a proposition
been made, but it is being
discussed.

• Why do the streets flood so bad around cam-
pus? I lost my shoes twice trying to get to class.
• From what I've heard during recent conversa-
tions, a majority of Tarleton students will not be
accepting or supportive of the Gay-Straight
Alliance. Just to prove that statement wrong we
should do the opposite. Let's join forces at games
and show our spirit in unity. Hopefully, Tarleton
students just have the 'wrong impression*. See ya
at the GAME!!!
• Wow! I had no idea how much water the streets
around Tarleton could hold. I thought 1 was going
to drown at one point, I hope everyone has invest-
ed in a good pair of waders or mud boots.
• I just wanted to say that Tarleton organizations
and clubs should not be rivals and try to out do
each other. We are all part of the Tarleton family
and we should all get along. We should help each
other instead of trying to bring each other down.
• Hey everyone. Just wanted to say that the paper
looks great this year, Keep on covering all the cam-
pus activity. I like knowing what is going on on-
campus more than in the world.
* Is it just me or do we get too many junk emails
on our Tarleton accounts? Everyday T have to
delete at least 10 or 15 emails that are either junk or
don't pertain to me. Is there any way to restrict
incoming emails?
* What is with the "meat locker" classrooms? This
is still summer time. So the classrooms should not
be this cold. I have to bring a jacket or sweater to
class just to keep from freezing,
* The Texan football team did a great job on
Saturday. They beat Angelo State 40-9. Way to go
guys! Keep up the good work.
* What is up with all the demolition, destruction
and empty construction sites on campus? What is
going to be put in those places and when will it be
finished? All the bare ground and torn down
houses takes away from the appearance of the
campus.
