Highlight of 'Black Awareness Week
Civic Series to present Mainor
Rayfer Earl'e Mainor
An appearance by award
winning poet/writer Rayfer
Earl'e| Mainor on March 19 will
highlight Black Awareness Week
on the TSU campus.
The performance will be held
in The Studio starting at 8 p.m.
and will be sponsored by the
Tarleton Civic Series Committee.
TSU students and faculty will be
admitted free.
Mainor is a native of Seattle,
Wash,, and a graduate of
Langston University in
Oklahoma. While attending
Langston he served as president
of seven different study
organizations and as a senior was
elected president of the study
body. In 1969 he won the
Melvin B. Tolson Award for
"excellence in creative
literature" and in the same year
the mayor and town council
named Mainor Poet Laureate of
Langston for his "outstanding
works in the field of poetry and
contributions to mankind."
At Langston, Mainor also
adapted a narrative he wrote in
junior high school, "Two, But
Not of a Kind," into a drama
that won him a grant to attend
the Institute of Theatre Arts at
Lincoln University in Jefferson
City Mo.
At age 24, Mainor was
included in the Cambridge,
England edition of the
international reference journal.
Who's Who in Poetry. He is also
listed in The Dictionary of
International Biography, the
International Registrar of
Profiles, and Men of
Achievement.

country, and he has received
commendations from former
President Gerald Ford, Los
Angeles Mayor Sam Vorty,
Washington Governor Daniel J.
Evans, and Oklahoma Governor
David L. Boren.
Mainor served as
Poet-ln-Residence at Paul Quinn
College in 1970-71 and is
currently living in Los Angeles.
He is a professor of English at
the University of Redlands.

Nominations due March 22
March 22 is the deadline to sign up for cheerleader elections.
March 29 is the deadline for petitions for the Tarleton Texan.
The Texan petition should include 25 student sign|tures. A slip
from the Registrar's office stating that the student is not on
Sqholastic Probation must be included with both cheerleader and
Texan applications. These should be turned into the Student
Personnel Office, first floor of Davis Hall. The elections will be April
12.
Nominations for Mr. and Miss TSU and class favorites are also due
Thursday, March 22. The elections will be the following Thursday,
March 29,
Senate chooses The Debonaires

Ray Wylie Hubbard will not
play at the Street Dance and
Barbeque May 3, announced
David Myers, chairman of the
Bar-B-Q Dance Committee, at
Monday night's Senate meeting.
The Debonaires will perform
instead.

Pledges enjoy "Hump Day" celebration along with the pleasant spring weather. "Hump
Day" is observed for reaching the middle of Hell Week-it's down-hill from here

higher price than before, plus
extra stipulations within the
contract not previously agreed
on. The Debonaires were our
first choice for the dance and
they have now becorm

year's All School Function will
include the surrounding
community. A Javalena
Cook-off (since many people
can't obtain Javalena, pork may
be substited) is scheduled along
with a greased pig chase, a
Softball game and a superstars"
contest. The function is set for
May 5, and more details will be
publicized at a later date.
A 50's Dance is also planned
for that weekend on Friday
nigh}: May 4. There will be a
dance and dress contest with
prizes awarded.
In other action, the Senate
passed,a recommendation to be
sent to the Faculty Senate for an
Orientation Course? to be
required for all freshmen. Some
departments haye such a course
on their curriculum, but this
would institutionlize a uniform
course for all freshmen.
The Senate also discussed
complaints |leard about certain
faculty members. No action was
taken.

presented Dr. Vance Terrell
the Supporter of the Month
award at Monday's meeting.
Among the contributions
Dr. Terrell has made to TSU
are: He started the first
scholarship program;
Chairman of the Committee
tcr make TSU a four year
schooj; donated two floats
for the parade; helped to
get "the T$U Med. Tech
program set up in Ft..
Worth; and was one of the
originators of the Texan
Club.
