Western civilization has two
choices-either return to Biblical
principles or .face, the loss of
freedom • under an authoritarian
regime. This is the thesis of "How
Should We Then Live," a new
10-part film series showing at the
Church of Christ Bible Chair Feb.
27-May8. 1
Hie series, subtitled, "The Rise
and Decline of Western Thought j
and Culture," is the work of Dr. '
Francis Schaeffer, an Americari
scholar living in Switzerland.
The Freedoms that the western
world enjoyed were based: on
Reformation Biblical beliefs, Dr.
Schaeffer claims. The founding ■
fathers of these countries bdlieved
that humans were created5by God
with certain inalienable rights. "If •
Christians would commit
themselves to the Lordship of i
Christ, we could have ra:New :
Reformation," he said ;"and
replace arbitrary absolutes with
truth once again."
The films, which parallel a
recent book, by the same title;
were written and narrated by Dr.
Schaeffer and produced by Gospel "
Films of Muskegon, Mich. Dr.
Schaeffer's son, Frank, ■ Schaeffer ;
V, served as producer for the
project which took the film
makers to 100 locations in 12
countries.
In a documentary "you are
there" style, the series begins with
the death of Roman culture and
civilization and trace the
development of the West up to
our own day before considering
the choices we have for' the
future. The 30-mjnute episodes
include: The Roman Age,; The
Middle Ages, The Renaissance
The Reformation, The
• !
Revolutionalry Age, The
Scientific Age, The Age of
Non-reason, The Age of
Fragmentation, The Age of
Personal Psace and Affluence and
Final Choices.
Book donated to Library
by C of C Bible Chair
When Harvy Gover, reference/circulation librarian, saw the
first film in the series "How Should We Then live," shown at
the Church of Christ Bible Chair, he liked it so well that he
wanted to buy the book, that the film was based on for
the Library,
Instead of having to buy it, though, the Church of Christ
Bible Chair donated a copy of the book How Should We Then
Live to the library. While the film is showing (7 p.m. on
Mondays through May 8) the book will be on a two-hour
reserve for anyone who would like to read it.
