Carney named a winner.
Ritche L. Carney of Garland,
Texas, has been chosen as winner
of the George C. Marshall ROTC
Award at TSU in Stephenville,
which is being given for the first
time during the 1977-78 academic
year by the U.S. Army to the
outstanding senior in each of the
280 college and university ROTC
detachments.
Cooperating with the Army on
this special undertaking is the
George, C. Marshall Research
Foundation here which initiated
the award to recognize leadership
within the Army's Reserve
Officer Training Program. The

For all the very new and
prospective owners of small
computers, help is on th« way.
April 1, there will be a conference
primarily designed for these
people. The conference is
sponsored by the Continuing
Education Program. >
The theme of the conference,
said Dan Collins, assistant
professor of computer science at
TSU, is "Now that I've bought it,
what do I do with it?" Participants
will (1) gain additional knowledge
about computers, (2) learn more
about programming, (3) meet
others involved in personal
computing, and (4) evaluate and
receive ideas about the many fun
and- serious ' uses'1 o f
micro-computers.
Items of interest during the
workshop include: Microcourses
in the fundamentals of computer
theory; programming the BASIC
language; the advantages,
limitations and uses of
micro-computers. Also discussions
of micro-computers, hardware,
applications and games,' and
exhibits and demonstrations.
Collins will be coordinator of
the workshop. He has had nine
years experience in educational
computing, business data
processing and systems analysis.
Experienced computer users,
vendors, business personnel and
educators are all invited to attend.
All participants are urged to bring
their computers for
demonstrations and programming
practice.
Registration at the door will be
April 1 and will cost $15.
Pre-registration deadline is March
17 with a fee of $10. TSU
students will be admitted to the
conference for half price ($5).

ROTC Award Conference on
national security issues of the
United States in Lexington,
Virginia, April 20-22. The
Director of the Marshall
Foundation, Ambassador Fred L.
Hadsel, and the Coordinator of
the Conference, Colonel Gerald L.
Nay, Jr., are presently completing
plans for this meeting.
In addition, winners will
receive a certificate from the
Marshall Foundation and a set of
the biography of General Marshall
by Dr. Forrest C. Pogue, now
Director of the Eisenhower
Institute, the Smithsonian
Institution.
Speakers for the conference in
order of appearance on the
program are: Dean Rusk, former
secretary of state and now sibley
professor of international law, the
University of Georgia; Amos A.
Jordan, Jr., executive director,
Center for Strategic and
International Studies, Georgetown
University; Josiah Bunting III,
president, Hampden-Sydney
College; General Bernard W.
Rogers, army chief of staff;
Lieutenant General DeWitt C.
Smith, Jr., deputy chief of staff
for personnel, Department of the
Army.
The George C. Marshall ROTC
Award is so named because of the
distinguished role played by
George C. Marshall as Army Chief
of Staff, 193945; Secretary of
State, 194 7-49(; Secretary of
Defense, 1950-51; and winner of
the Nobel Peace Prize, 1953.
Ritche is the son of Mr. & Mrs.
John P. Carney, Sr., of Garland.
He is a political science, history
major. He is the senior class
vice-president, a member of the
Alpha Phi Omega Service

Platoon Leadership and Military
Knowledge Awards during
attendance at the 1977 Ft. Riley
Advanced: Camp. He wears the1
Distinguished Military Student
Badge, is airborne qualified and
has been designated to receive a
Regular Army Commission in the
Infantry- Branph of the United
States Army. ,

Application deadline for
financial aid for the summer
session is April 1.
No financial aid will be
automatically renewed, said Gail
Mayfield, financial aid director.
Any student who now has any
type of scholarship or grant must
reapply, She added. Applications
are available in the financial aid
office in Davis Hall.
Registration for the first
summer session is June 5.
