see her old warty face again, except in my night-
mares." "Well you can bet I'll be the first one out
the door," I said with a smirk on my face. The
same smirk Mrs. Wheeler wiped off my face on a
daily basis.
The drive home from school was great.
Sarah and I had anticipated this trip for so long.
We stopped at my house where our luggage was
already packed. We loaded it into the car, and
headed to my grandmother's. I spent most of the
six hour drive telling Sarah all about Grandmother
and my cousins. I could not out of all my summers
remember having a dull time at Grandmother's.
Each summer all four of my cousins and I stayed at
her house. There we would spend endless hours
fishing, swimming, and running wild through the
woods that surrounded Grandmother's house.
While we were in our world of Indians, cowboys,
knights and princesses, my grandmother was in her
world. The kitchen. It seemed she cooked all day
sometimes. Honey ham or brisket with all the trim-
mings. I savored her layered lasagna. Not to men-
tion goodies like brownies, blackberry cobbler,
cookies, and the most heavenly red velvet cake. I
could already smell it.
And this summer would be especially
great. It took weeks of begging, but Sarah and I
eventually convinced our moms that Sarah should
spend the summer with me at Grandmothers.
"Who's all going to be there, Mom?" I
asked. "I know Megan and Katlyn are already
there. And maybe Dustin and Coy. And little Gra-
cie will be there too. Aunt Lisa decided she was
old enough to go this summer. Are you excited?"27
